Among Gainesville’s urban design enthusiasts, there is much discussion about making Gainesville walkable, and there are many good reasons to work toward this goal. Science tells us that people who walk regularly are physically and mentally healthier. People who conduct their daily business on foot use cars less often, reducing the volume of traffic and the need for parking. Walking does not produce toxins or CO2 (except for breathing), so it reduces the greenhouse effect. With these broad benefits, why do so few people walk regularly in Gainesville? Like most American cities, Gainesville grew during the 20th century, when automobiles became common and cities changed to accommodate them. Today, Gainesville extends more than 8 miles, from east to west, or north to south. People live, work, study and shop across this entire area. Most of Gainesville has been, and continues to be, designed for cars, not walkers. ....

When COVID came to town and the lockdown began in earnest, Seck37 picked up his paints and went to work on a blank wall . perhaps for the last time. “The wall was donated, and I wanted to paint something bright and beautiful for Gainesville,” he recalled. “It was a complete ghost town and the streets were empty. Cops were asking me what I was doing. “I said I was painting a mural as a gift to the city just to keep everybody’s spirits up.” That “gift” was “One Love Gainesville,” a bold yellow and green composition of hearts and palm fronds that is still on display at the corner of Main Street and Northeast 10th Avenue. ....
