'You cannot manage anything you cannot measure': La Jolla planners support short-term rental data system

Print
Hoping to find quantitative data that can measure the impact of short-term rentals under the city of San Diego’s new ordinance, the La Jolla Community Planning Association will work with the Ocean Beach Planning Board on a set of metrics to submit to the city.
The idea came from the San Diego Community Planners Committee, which has representation from all the city’s planning groups. The metrics were to be taken back to the groups for feedback before a final list is voted on this month.
The new STR ordinance was signed into law in April and is to be reviewed annually for effectiveness. ....

Opinion: Jennifer Campbell has brought recall effort on herself

Readers ask “Who are these people seeking to recall Council President Jen Campbell”? I am a 50-year resident of the Council District 2. I lived in Mission Beach for 25 years, was active and an officer on the Mission Beach Town Council and a board member of the Save the Coaster Committee. I now live in Ocean Beach. For more than 30 years, I have been involved in Mission Bay Park advocacy.
I am offended by actions such as her pushing an short-term vacation rental proposal “negotiated” privately which would nullify San Diego Municipal Code zoning for single-family homes. I am offended by her treatment of constituents she disagrees with, and I am offended that she was elected council president despite several hundred people testifying on behalf of someone I consider to be far better suited to leading the San Diego City Council. I listened to the entire 8 hours; only a fraction of the calls supported Campbell. ....

San Diego City Council to hear short-term rental ordinance Feb. 23

Print
A short-term rental ordinance promoted by District 2 Councilwoman Jennifer Campbell is slated to be heard by the San Diego City Council during its meeting Tuesday, Feb. 23.
A staff report outlining the latest version will be available in the days leading up to the meeting.
Campbell’s chief of staff, Venus Molina, said the current iteration has been updated to reflect comments made by San Diego planning commissioners when they heard the proposal in December.
“The Planning Commission had amendments and recommendations, so we incorporated their amendments into the new stuff,” Molina said. “We didn’t incorporate all their comments, but those are the changes we made.” ....

Community leaders lobby against police cuts as San Diego grapples with worsening deficit [The San Diego Union-Tribune]

Community leaders lobby against police cuts as San Diego grapples with worsening deficit [The San Diego Union-Tribune]
Residents and community leaders from across San Diego lobbied city officials Wednesday not to cut Police Department funding, despite new projections showing the city’s budget deficit is worse than expected.
The new projections show the tourism-reliant city is facing an $85.4 million deficit during the current fiscal year that ends June 30. That’s on top of a $154 million deficit projected for the new fiscal year.
Mayor Todd Gloria says he is exploring possible mid-year emergency budget cuts to close the $85.4 million gap. But he said he is not proposing cuts immediately, primarily because the city may receive significant federal and state COVID-19 relief money. ....
