For the 2nd time, Northrop Grumman catches a satellite in Earth orbit | Space

Northrop Grumman said last week that its Mission Extension Vehicle 2 – a robot spacecraft designed to help prolong the life of satellites in space – successfully docked to a commercial communications satellite. “We are now the only provider of life extension services for satellites,” a company spokesperson said.

Last week, the American aerospace company Northrop Grumman and its subsidiary SpaceLogistics announced a successful test of a newly developed robotic satellite-servicing spacecraft, called Mission Extension Vehicle 2 (MEV-2). The robot craft successfully docked with a commercial communications satellite, Intelsat 10-02, on April 12, 2021. Northrop Grumman’s second robotic life extension spacecraft docked with an Intelsat satellite in geosynchronous orbit Monday, the first link-up between a commercial servicing mission and an operational communications craft.
The two commercial satellites connected more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator at 1:34 p.m. EDT (1734 GMT) Monday, according to Northrop Grumman. ....

Two satellites docking, while still in space, sounds like the plot of a sci-fi movie, but that’s just what Northrop Grumman has done to extend the lifespan of one of Intelsat’s TV satellites. IS-10-02 may not have an interesting name but it’s certainly important to Intelsat, being responsible for part of the company’s satellite TV service across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South America.
Problem is, satellites don’t last forever, but servicing them has traditionally been off the table. Providers are generally forced to launch a fresh satellite instead, which is both expensive and leaves more space junk to accumulate in orbit around Earth. That’s already led to concerns that projects like the International Space Station could be at increasing risk of tech-trash collisions. ....

A mission will launch to space this weekend that aims to demonstrate commercial technology to remove orbital debris, such as a defunct satellite.
The showcase is being staged by the Astroscale company and will be run from an operations centre in the UK.
With more and more satellites being launched every year, there is now an imperative to try to keep orbits above the Earth clear of old junk.
And this ought to drive a vibrant market for debris removal services.
We are entering an age of satellite constellations and some of these spacecraft could fail in orbit - and that would be a serious issue, said John Auburn, Astroscale s UK managing director. ....
