The National Library of Australia s Main Reading Room houses a collection of sculptures and paintings inspired by Indigenous stories of the Australian landscape.

Since 2001, four machine-embroidered panels by British textile artist Alice Kettle have been displayed in the Main Reading Room. Kettle estimates she used 5 million stitches over a period of 18 months to create the panels. Many of the fine threads are made from synthetic rayon and cotton. They ‘capture the luminescence of the shifting light and the brilliance of the landscape’. ....

Karajarri Nyangumarta man Stephen Stewart has defied all the odds to keep his culture alive for more than a century.

The life expectancy for Indigenous men is 71.6 years of age, but Mr Stewart may be as old as 109.
That makes him the oldest Aboriginal man still alive in West Australia s Pilbara region, if not the entire country. ....

Traveller letters: Hotel holding charges left me broke in a foreign country

Some years ago I stayed in Dubai for three nights at a new, boutique hotel. I arrived at midnight, tired, and handed over a credit card (Traveller letters, February 6). Being used to the system where they took a paper imprint of your credit card for security and then tore it up when you checked out, I took little notice of the comment about a deposit. I had some cash and two cards, one of which I always leave in the room safe for security. The next day I paid cash for a taxi to the nearest mall where I chose items at a favourite shop. Embarrassingly, my card was declined. The ATM refused cash and I knew I had just enough cash for the return taxi fare but not coffee as well. The hotel had taken full accommodation payment and 50 per cent of that sum for the deposit. These charges had used up the card s daily limit and, unfortunately, I had taken that card to go shopping.
