ISLAMABAD: Former chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani on Monday demanded for convening the Committee of the Whole of the Senate in which all stakeholders are invited to formulate policy and legislation to ensure the protection of journalists and ensure the implementation of articles 19 and 19A, Constitution, 1973.
“The government has circumvented articles 19 and 19A, Constitution, 1973, by suppressing, imposing censorship, using Pemra, issuing advices and intimidating by use of force the media in Pakistan,” he said while demanding the legislation to ensure protection and implementation of Article 19 and 19-A of the Constitution.
Mian Raza Rabbani said as many as 15,000 journalists and media workers lost their jobs, 148 cases of attacks and violation against the media were reported during May 2020 and April 2021 as a consequence the Pakistani people have been denied their constitutiona ....

Amnesty International slams govt for not protecting journalists

The Afghan authorities must take urgent steps to provide journalists with greater protection, said Amnesty International on Monday – World Press Freedom Day.
This comes after a year of spiralling threats, intimidation, harassment, and violent attacks against the country’s media workers.
At least 11 journalists were killed in 2020 in targeted attacks in Afghanistan, with four more reportedly killed this year.
Amnesty International said in a statement “nearly all the killings, invariably carried out by unidentified gunmen, have gone uninvestigated. Dozens of others have been injured, while journalists routinely receive threats, intimidation and harassment because of their work. ....

CHENNAI: DMK chief M K Stalin, who will be sworn in as the next chief minister of Tamil Nadu on May 7, has said journalists will be considered frontline workers.
Stalin tweeted that journalists of both print and electronic media are discharging their duties during rain, summer and pandemics by risking their lives. “They will be considered the frontline workers of the state,” Stalin tweeted.
All rights and facilities meant for frontline workers would be extended to journalists, he added.

The Karnataka government has declared all journalists in the state as frontline workers and will consider them for priority vaccination against COVID-19, state Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said.
The move comes amid a surge in coronavirus cases in the state 44,631 cases were recorded today, with 20,870 cases in Bengaluru alone.
Our government has decided to consider journalists as frontline workers and accord priority in vaccination against Covid-19, the chief minister said in a tweet today. The journalists will get the vaccine shot free of cost. ....
