LJUBLJANA: Slovenian journalists on Monday launched a donation campaign to support the EU country’s sole news agency as the centre-right government stopped STA’s financing after accusing it of being a disgrace .
Janez Jansa’s government has not made any payments to STA since the beginning of the year, demanding the replacement of its top management, despite domestic and international pressure.
The lack of funding is threatening the functioning of STA, founded in 1991, and the payment of the salaries of its around 90 employees. National and international journalists associations now aim to gather two million euros ($2.4 million) the amount the agency usually gets from public funds annually through crowdfunding. ....

RSF sounds alarm on World Press Freedom Day

(Last Updated On: May 3, 2021)
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Centre for the Protection of Afghan Women Journalists (CPAWJ) on Monday sounded the alarm about the plight of the media and the future for journalism in Afghanistan.
In a statement issued by the RSF, the organizations said: “The press freedom situation is disastrous in Afghanistan 14 months after the Taliban and United States signed a peace accord on 29 February 2020, and eight months after the Taliban and Afghan government began peace talks.”
At least 20 journalists and media workers have been the victims of targeted attacks in the past six months and eight, including four women, have been killed. Around 30 others have received death threats in connection with their journalistic work, RSF stated. ....

'Totally unacceptable': Ramaphosa laments intimidation of journalists

“The report notes that while the South African constitution protects freedom and we have an established culture of investigative journalism, a number of impediments still hinder journalists in the performance of their duties. This includes legal injunctions against taking images of national key points or reporting on matters involving state security,”  Ramaphosa said in his weekly newsletter on Monday.
“It also notes an increase during 2020 of the intimidation of journalists, especially female journalists on social media. Such intimidation is totally unacceptable, but is particularly harmful when it is directed at female journalists and is occasionally accompanied by threats of sexual violence. This is a matter of great concern and cannot be allowed.” ....
