Denver Newsroom, Feb 18, 2021 / 12:26 am (CNA).- Amid a winter storm that brought freezing temperatures and widespread power outages to much of Texas, Catholics are stepping up to help their neighbors even while dealing with their own shortages of electricity and water.
Unseasonably cold temperatures in most of Texas including record lows in cities like San Antonio and Corpus Christi along with snow and ice have this week crippled much of the state and have caused widespread water problems and power outages. ....

“It’s a crazy, bitterly cold time for us in Texas,” Betsy Ballard, the director of communications for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, said by email as her community attempted to emerge from a weekend cold snap that has besieged the southwest. She said most Texans were “ill-prepared to deal with substantial icing and power loss.. [I]t’s heartbreaking for the thousands of people who lack sufficient resources to remain warm and fed.” ....

FOX 26 Reporter Tiffany Justice spoke with some Houston organizations on what they re doing to help the homeless ahead of the cold weather that is approaching.
HOUSTON - Due to COVID-19, major non-profits have canceled things like coat drives and say that monetary donations are the best way to help right now.
FOX 26 spoke with several clients at Turning Point Center.
I was homeless before I came here, and it was tough, said Melinda Roney, a client at The Turning Point Center. I thank God for this place. I have a roof over my head and I’m not in the cold. ....

Heights man Robert Fowler Turns To Ted and donates washer-dryer replacement to new American family

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) A long-time Houston Heights resident says he spent almost 60 hours trying to get a busted washer-dryer replaced before he Turned to Ted. The best part of the solution is that the replacement wasn t even for him, but a needy charity.
Here s the deal, Robert Fowler told ABC13 recently in his backyard, We bought it in July of 2019.
Fowler was speaking of a busted clothes washer still sitting just inside his breakfast room.
We would put the clothes in, it would start to spin, it would stop and it would say, Rebalance load, he said. It would go 15 or 30 seconds, it would stop, [and again light up] Rebalance load. It would just keep doing this over and over and over. ....
