University of Leeds | News > Environment > Glaciers accelerate in the Getz region of West Antarctica

Glaciers in West Antarctica are moving more quickly from land into the ocean, contributing to rising global sea levels.
A 25-year record of satellite observations has been used to show widespread increases in ice speed across the Getz sector for the first time, with some ice accelerating into the ocean by nearly 50%.
The new study, led by the University of Leeds, reports that 14 glaciers in the Getz region are thinning and flowing more quickly into the ocean. Between 1994 and 2018, 315 gigatonnes of ice has been lost, adding 0.9 mm to global mean sea level – equivalent to 126 million Olympic swimming pools of water.   ....

Thompson-Munson is currently studying for a Ph.D. at the University of Colorado Boulder and recently took time away from studying to make clear up the iceberg confusion. In a Twitter thread, the young scientist explained what should be obvious: An iceberg with a little pointy peak on top that descends in an ice cream cone shape would float on its side. That is to say that an iceberg shaped like this would look more like this when it’s floating. ....

A special department will be set up by the government of Uttarakhand state in India to monitor and study all the glaciers through satellite , according to the local authorities. The move can help probe the cause of the glacier burst on Feb 7 which has claimed the lives of 67 people at least.
All angles (related to the glacier burst) should be investigated, said Uttarakhand state irrigation minister Satpal Maharaj told the local media earlier.
Over 140 others are still missing from massive flooding caused by the Nanda Devi glacier burst on Feb 7 in the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand state which borders China. Most of them are hydro projects workers and local villagers. ....
