Winston-Salem man wants murder conviction overturned, saying prosecutor used race in jury selection. Evidence? Prosecutor admitted in open court.

A Winston-Salem man is asking an appellate court to overturn his murder conviction, saying there is clear evidence that a prosecutor dismissed two Black jurors because of their race. The evidence? The prosecutor admitted it in court when challenged.
And an appellate court in 1998 found that the prosecutor illegally used race in jury selection. But the man s conviction was not overturned because of a narrow interpretation of a U.S. Supreme Court decision prohibiting race discrimination in jury selection, the man s attorney said. Race had to be the sole reason a juror was removed for his conviction to be overturned, but that rule has since changed, the attorney said. Now, it just has to be a significant factor. ....

Fecal bacteria levels found at Carolina Beach and Holden Beach exceeded EPA standards last year

87 beaches in North Carolina were considered potentially unsafe for swimming at least one day in 2020. Seven beaches were considered potentially unsafe at least a quarter of the days tested, including Carolina Beach and Holden Beach.
Last summer, Environment North Carolina Research and Policy Center commenced its annual analysis of bacteria testing. Each week, beaches and rivers across the state were tested for E. coli, a bacteria found in human and animal feces. The results were then compared to recreational water quality standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Based on the bacteria levels, this year s Safe for Swimming report found that 87 beaches were considered potentially unsafe for swimming at least one day in 2020. Seven beaches were considered potentially unsafe at least ....

Though it's Shark Week on TV, sharks are year-round in NC

While “shark attack” is an often-used term, it’s not really accurate because sharks don’t seek out humans to “attack,” they’re just doing what comes naturally in the wild.
Sharks are opportunistic feeders and occasionally bite a surfer or swimmer if they venture into murky waters and splash a lot at the surface. This splashing action sends the shark a signal that you may be wounded, and therefore an easy meal.
