May 27, 2021
An amendment to the Read before Grade Three law could impact fourth graders next school year.
The bill, currently under consideration in the State Senate, would pause the state’s retention requirement this year due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and extend it to next year’s third and fourth graders.
“In the midst of a pandemic and a struggling economy, adding another stressor to our students and families doesn’t seem very reasonable,” said Buckley Community Schools Superintendent and Elementary Principal Jessica Harrand.
Read by Grade Three was a law put in place in 2016 to flag students who were reading below their grade level. If they’re flagged, they must repeat the third grade. This proposed amendment would mean the same for fourth graders. ....

School districts to continue in-person learning | News, Sports, Jobs

cbleck@miningjournal.net
MARQUETTE It’s business as usual, at least for the time being, for area school districts.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday recommended a two-week suspension of in-person high school classes, all youth sports and indoor restaurant dining as a result of the statewide surge in COVID-19 cases.
In an online message to parents and guardians in the school district, MAPS Superintendent Bill Saunders said he has decided to keep Marquette Senior High School open for face-to-face education and continue with athletic participation until data indicates this is unsafe.
Saunders indicated the announcement came with little warning and didn’t allow much time to communicate with families. However, he acknowledged consulting with area school superintendents, the MAPS Board of Education and the Marquette County Health Department. ....

Restaurant Week is the first event, slated to take place April 11-17, providing a great opportunity to support downtown restaurants in turbulent times. Restaurants that would like to participate in the weeklong event can register through March 17. Although restaurants are allowed to open at 25% capacity, the DDA strongly encourages ordering takeout during Restaurant Week. A complete lineup of participating restaurants and menus for Restaurant Week will be released in late March. ....
