Vail extends season by a week at Tahoe resorts


SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. – Vail Resorts’ trio of ski areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin are staying open a week longer than originally planned.
Officials announced Tuesday that Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar California will stay open through Sunday, April 18, while Kirkwood Mountain Resort will shut down at the end of day on Sunday, April 11.
Along with offering a bit more skiing and riding, officials said it’s also a way for the resorts a way to say “thank you to guests and pass holders, who have been supportive as we have managed through this unique season.”
Heavenly plans to operate beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain accessed by the Heavenly Tram, Gunbarrel Express, Patsy’s, Powderbowl Express, Sky Express, Heavenly Gondola, Tamarack Express and Dipper Express. ....

Winter Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe

A storm moving in Thursday afternoon is expected to drop over a foot of snow and could affect the evening commute and also holiday weekend travel.
The National Weather Service in Reno on Thursday morning issued a Winter Weather Advisory that goes into effect at 4 p.m. and lasts through 4 a.m. Friday.
The service expects anywhere from 0 to 4 inches of snow at lake level, 6 to 12 inches north of U.S. Highway 50 and 6 to 18 inches above 7,000 feet south of U.S. 50.

With fresh snow on the slopes and blue skies overhead, not even a pandemic has been able to keep people from Tahoe’s famed ski resorts. During a recent weekend, the lift line for the famous KT-22 at Squaw Valley was so long one longtime season-ticket holder was heard quipping that it extended all the way to Truckee.
He was exaggerating, of course, but there was some truth to his words. Reports of long lift lines have been a part of the 2021 Tahoe narrative that also includes social distance protocols and limited ticketing. And while there are reports of weekdays being busier than normal and even busier than weekends, this longer Presidents Day holiday weekend is expected to be the busiest of the year. Jan. 29 The major storm that pounded Northern California this week dropped a total of 3.74 inches of rain on Sacramento over five days, according to a report from the National Weather Service.
The precipitation report, issued Friday morning, indicated that the storm drenched the valley floor with rain. Folsom received more than 3 inches. Galt on the south end of Sacramento County had 2.8 inches of rain and Rio Linda on the north end had 1.22 inches of rain.
Winters received the most precipitation in Yolo County with 3.56 inches, Auburn in Placer County had more than 4 inches as did Placerville in El Dorado County, according to the weather service report. ....
