France to invest EUR68.5m in Ivory Coast cotton sector

A report published by
Reuters, citing comments made by France s Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire when he visited the Ivory Coast, says the cotton production programme will target 120,000 cotton farmers in the northern region of the country and boost revenue in the cotton sector.
The Ivory Coast produced 490,000 tonnes of cotton in the 2019/20 season and 2020/21 output is forecast at 500,000 tonnes by the Agriculture Ministry, the report states.
If the laws are adopted, buyers would be required to trace their inputs through every step of their supply chains, including starting at the level of small farms.
The Commission has announced it will present its legislative proposal on the matter later this year. ....

KARACHI: Cotton arrivals in the ginneries have been recorded at 5.64 million bales by May 1, the lowest arrivals in three decades, traders said on Monday.
According to the fortnightly report of the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), total arrivals were recorded at 5.64 million bales during this period. There was no comparison with the last year’s arrivals, as the data were not collected during this period due to a lockdown in the country.
Last year, total production of 8.7 million bales was recorded, while this year, the country would face a shortage of 3 million bales.
Of these arrivals, 70,200 bales were exported, while 5.53 million bales were sold to the textile mills. ....

KARACHI: Local cotton market remained sluggish in the week, largely owing to dollar depreciation, dwindling yarn
demand, erratic global trends, and Ramzan timings, with ginners mostly opting to suspend their operations, traders said.
Traders were mostly expecting the slowdown to continue in the coming days, saying Covid-19 had affected the trade globally, which had also resulted in the less demand in the local market, which also came under the influence of the international markets.
The cotton season has almost ended and ginners are left with less than 60,000 bales that are also being sold gradually, as the lint was being purchased by some mills. However, trade volume is very low and almost all ginning factories have closed their operations. ....
