'Thank you Roosecote': By-election candidate pens letter to residents

BARROW resident Paul Griffiths has penned a letter to people in Roosecote.
Mr Griffiths stood in the Roosecote by-election this month, but was unsuccessful in his bid to be a councillor.
In his letter to residents Mr Griffiths wrote: I would like to thank the residents of Roosecote who offered me their support in the recent by-election.
As a Labour member I was honoured to have been selected, by our local party, as a candidate for the role of Barrow Borough Councillor, to represent a ward I have proudly lived in for over 50 years.
Covid obviously played a part in our campaign approach and the local Labour party responsibly decided not to knock on residents’ doors to explain our policies, so unfortunately, I didn’t get the opportunity to discuss my thoughts and ideas for our area with you and more importantly, I missed out on listening to your concerns and find out what you would like to see improved. ....

Furness Pride 2021: Town centre sees outpouring of LGBTQ support

The town has been painted with rainbow colours in support of this year’s Furness Pride event.
Covid-19 restrictions has forced Barrow’s second Furness Pride to be virtual once again this year, however, this hasn’t deterred an outpouring of support for the LGBTQ+ event.
Drop Zone Youth Crew’s Furness Pride inaugural event took place last year following calls from the LGBTQ+ youth group for an annual event promoting pride inclusivity.
The event, which was supposed to take place in Barrow town centre on Saturday, was ran virtually instead, with a host of fun-filled activities running online.
Hayley Preston, Barrow Borough Councillor and lead member for equality, diversity and inclusion, praised the community support behind the event. ....

Cumbria Police investigate cause of 'major fire' in Barrow

AN investigation has been launched into a major fire which took place in the Barrow town centre.
Seven fire crews were called to a building in Barrow’s Duke Street on Thursday, spending two hours tackling the blaze which had spread through the unused building.
Smoke was seen coming from the rear of the building, which houses the disused Antalya takeaway at the front.
People in the neighbouring buildings and businesses were told to evacuate in case smoke spread, station manager Roger Exley said.
The fire boss, who described the incident as ‘high risk’, said a blaze had started in the ground floor and burnt upwards to the first floor. ....
