From using artificial intelligence to predict sales to capitalizing on a seafood staple, this year’s Coastal Entrepreneur Awards winners run the gamut. While vastly different, what the 11 companies and organizations do have in common is being chosen by a panel of judges as CEA category winners.
Their wins were based on whether they are entrepreneurial and of those deemed entrepreneurial, which organizations were most likely to be financially successful (or for nonprofits, have the most impact). Read more about the process and the winners inside this issue.

That’s one of the pieces of advice we give our Coastal Entrepreneur Award judges each year when they’re faced with the task of making their picks. Who shows high-growth potential? ....

Burgaw leaders explore tourism, quality of life improvements downtown

While the Cape Fear region continues to boom, Burgaw leaders are working to turn downtown into a tourist destination with plans to provide spaces for festivals, concerts, food truck rodeos, and more.
As the director of the Burgaw Area Chamber of Commerce, Arwyn Smith believes new attractions in the heart of Burgaw will continue to bring people to visit or to call it home, especially as Wilmington becomes more packed.
“Wilmington is growing out more towards Brunswick County and more towards Pender County,” she said. “While the growth of this area continues to happen, Burgaw is going to become a bigger suburb. It’s going to grow … it has to. People don’t want to be stacked on top of each other and there’s people who want to have a little space and a little land. ....

St. Helena growth possible thanks to rural location, open land

Some welcome it, while others are not embracing it.
“The workforce is here if somebody wanted to come,” Neuwirth said.
Mayor Robert Barnhill felt differently about the village getting bigger.
“I really don’t see much growth going on here, because basically we’re a farming community” Barnhill said. “When St. Helena was settled it was laid down in 10-acre tracks. A good number of them are leased by farmers and they continue to farm here. That’s really what we wanted – to leave it much like it is now.
“If they ever quit farming, I’m sure this place will fill up with houses, Barnhill added. “I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon.”  ....

BURGAW  What was once the most popular drink in the world  just ask the Vikings  has been making a slow-but-sure comeback over the last decade, according to The American Mead Maker’s Association. Meaderies have been evolving fast since 2003, when only 60 existed in the U.S. By 2013, there were 200; by early 2016, 300. Today, the association counts 450.
Southeastern North Carolina will add to that list when Retro Meadery launches its own brand of fermented wine this summer. Co-owners Michael Fields, Daryl Benitez, and Matthew Clemmons are in the early stages of opening their Burgaw-based company and are eyeing the old Harrell’s Department Store, located downtown proper. The independently owned department store  popularly known as a filming location in “I Know What You Did Last Summer” closed in 2020 after 117 years ....
