The US Air Force (USAF) is to stand up the 495th ‘Valkyries’ Squadron as its first overseas unit to operate the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
The first of two new US Air Force F-35A units at RAF Lakenheath in the UK is to be designated the 495th ‘Valkyries’ Squadron. (US Air Force)
The 48th Fighter Wing at Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath in the UK made the announcement on 16 February, noting that the new name was selected from a poll taken in December 2020. The 495th Squadron has also been given the motto ‘Mala Ipsa Nova’, Latin for ‘Bad News Itself’. ....

Vermont gets break as F-35s come to Tyndall Air Force Base

In Northwest Florida, the roar of military aircraft zooming overhead is widely greeted as the sound of freedom.
Through Thursday, that sound will be augmented by the rumbling of F-35 Lightning II fighter jets from the Vermont Air National Guard giving the residents of Burlington, Vermont, some apparently welcome freedom from that sound.
Quiet week ahead as F-35s head to Florida for training, was the headline chosen for an online story on the temporary absence of the Air National Guard fighter jets from Burlington on WCAX-TV, the city s CBS affiliate.
Airmen, aircraft and support equipment from the Vermont Air National Guard s 158th Fighter Wing left the Burlington Air National Guard Base at Burlington International Airport on Jan. 14 for a two-week exercise at Tyndall Air Force Base near Panama City. ....

Air Force IDs Guard Captain Killed in Michigan F-16 Crash; Base Flight Ops Halted

Jones awards include two Air Medals with combat C devices.
During a press conference Friday, 115th Fighter Wing commander Col. Bart Van Roo said he has suspended flight operations at the wing indefinitely amid the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.
It is grounded based on what we determine to be a safe time for us to fly again, Van Roo said.
Determining the causes of the crash and other contributing factors could take months, Van Roo said, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
Jones F-16 crashed around 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Hiawatha National Forest, roughly 300 miles northeast of the base, during a routine night training mission. The wing had planned to conduct night drills Monday through Thursday, according to unit announcements. ....

The pilot of an F-16 Fighting Falcon that crashed earlier this week in Michigan s Upper Peninsula has been found dead, the Air National Guard announced Thursday.
The aircraft, assigned to the Wisconsin Air National Guard s 115th Fighter Wing, out of Truax Field Air National Guard Base in Madison, crashed around 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Hiawatha National Forest, roughly 300 miles northeast of the base, officials said in a Facebook post. ....
