Remaining A Cultural Critic | Communication Arts

By Jiminie Ha
What was your point of entry to design? My introduction to design was probably when I was in grammar school, as my mother pursued continuing education in design and fashion design. We moved to France when I was about twelve years old, and my exposure to the arts was a major imprint on my youth. Even though my undergraduate degree was in international relations and ethnic studies, I would somehow figure out a way to pursue the arts late into my studies. I moved to New York City after graduation and worked some jobs in publishing; moonlighted as a stylist’s assistant; interned at magazines, streetwear companies; and somehow found myself at the design consultancy 2x4, working under Michael Rock, Susan Sellers and Georgie Stout first as an intern, and then as a junior designer. They saw something in me that I didn’t even recognize at that point, and encouraged me to pursue graduate school at Yale University. That is where everything changed for me. ....

Shulamit Nazarian presents a series of new paintings by New York-based artist Michael Stamm
Installation view.
LOS ANGELES, CA
.-Shulamit Nazarian is presenting ”so super sorry sir!”, a series of new paintings by New York-based artist Michael Stamm. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
The paintings in “so super sorry sir!” revel in their idiosyncratic, contradictory attitude toward morality, sexuality, mental health, and contemporary cultural politics. They feature an unlikely cast of characters––ranging from the Devil to an anthropomorphic hand–– whose disparate senses of virtue and spirituality often clash with societal convention. At once clinging to life and hurtling toward annihilation, the artist questions what self-actualization looks like in the face of an overly righteous and emotionally precarious world. ....

You ought to lie in rivers or in ponds
As do the waterweeds which harbour pike.
The body grows light in the water. When your arm
Falls easily from water into sky
The little wind rocks it absentmindedly
[From “Of Swimming in Lakes and Rivers,” by Bertolt Brecht]
An eddy is a spiral, a small vortex, which spins counter to and disrupts the current. Against the great tides of the ocean, or the modest flow of a stream, eddies catch and confuse, addle and amaze. To Bertolt Brecht floating inverts our relationship to the real: we transcend gravity, we “fall into the sky.” Here we see works which similarly push against the currents of our material world, and in doing so call on us to suspend disbelief: in repurposing ....
