My first PhD student will soon graduate, and it worries me a great deal am I going to add another PhD to a generation of jobless PhDs? I hope not, but a recent report indicates an alarmingly high number of jobless PhDs scholars with the highest academic qualification struggling to get permanent academic jobs. Reportedly political hiring at the universities and the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) shortsighted policies like prioritising numbers over quality, are the primary culprits.
Since its inception in 2002, HEC strived to increase the number of PhD faculty in universities greatly. As per HEC’s vision 2025, a substantial faculty increase is needed due to projected growth in university enrolment. So availability of faculty positions at universities doesn’t seem like an issue. Recently sacked HEC chairman had also denied job saturation in specific subject areas. However, due to ....

Will companies investment in HBCUs make corporate America more inclusive? — Quartz at Work

April 4, 2021
Spelman College has always had a robust recruiting season, with around 700 recruiters from companies and graduate schools coming to campus over the course of an academic year. But last year, the school saw a similar level of interest in just one semester.
In response to last year’s resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement following another spate of killings of Black Americans by police, various companies large and small have committed to recruiting fresh graduates, making donations, or finding other ways to get involved with America’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), including Spelman.

The increased outreach has been “stressful,” he says, as handling recruiters is only part of hi ....

Universities in Delhi gear up to curb Covid cases with stricter guidelines

The increase in coronavirus cases in the national capital has prompted institutions of higher education here including the Delhi University (DU) and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to take necessary steps to control the spread of the virus on their campuses.
While the DU issued guidelines on Saturday advising students to stay at home or their hostels and avoid physical presence for their academic work unless very essential , the JNU on Sunday made it mandatory for all to wear masks at all the times inside the campus.
In a notice, the DU said that academic activities and essential works will continue with thermal screening at gates, social distancing and wearing masks mandatorily, while entry inside the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, hostels and halls among other places will be restricted and no outsiders allowed. ....
