Pamplin Media Group - Column: Seven minutes of haunting terror in Forest Grove

April 02 2021
After her house was attacked, one woman works to protect her family and learn basic facts about their attacker.
Part 2 of a series
Shortly before 1 a.m. last Oct. 31, Mirella Castaneda and Pablo Weimann awoke to the alarm blaring from their Ram pickup in the driveway. The Forest Grove couple lives with their 13-year-old son, 11-year-old daughter, two foster sons, 13 and 16, and Castaneda s mother, due west of downtown Portland in the Washington County city.
Weimann, a construction worker who specializes in finish and tile work, shut off the alarm remotely and lay back down. But when it went off again, Castaneda, an administrative specialist at Washington County s Department of Environmental Health, got out of bed and stuck her head outside the front door, thinking she might see a raccoon. ....

Higher education minister Blade Nzimande said on Friday he was concerned about pockets of Covid-19 outbreaks at some universities and TVET colleges which had the potential to trigger a third wave of infections.
Earlier this week 55 students tested positive at the University of Pretoria (UP).
Apart from the outbreak at UP, the department had received other reports of Covid-19 infections within the post school education and training sector.
Nzimande appealed to students and staff to adhere to Covid-19 regulations as the academic year got under way. ....

Boise State's Online Program is Among the Best in the U.S.

It s one thing to offer virtual school as a matter of necessity, and it s another thing to make it great.  Boise State is succeeding at both and gaining national attention in the process.
When the pandemic hit last year and lockdowns started, schools across the country that were unprepared had to scramble to put something in place, and students and teachers had to figure out Google Classroom in a hurry.  My daughter s elementary school did have a program in place before the pandemic, but it sure changed a lot between March and September after parents, students, and teachers got together on what worked and what didn t.  Many tweaks were put into place, like having all-day activities instead of a work-at-your-own pace approach so the kids didn t finish for the day at 9:30 am and spend the rest of the time twiddling their thumbs.  Online school at the elementary level has been an adventure, to say the least.  But it s good prep for college. ....

Karachi University's visiting teachers not paid for over seven months

The entrance of Karachi University.
The University of Karachi’s visiting faculty, which makes up 60 per cent of the total academics at KU, have not been paid their salaries for over seven months, The News has learnt.
According to the available information, contract teachers have not been paid since August 2020, even though they have repeatedly approached the university’s administration to demand their salaries. The officials concerned, however, are yet to take action to address the issue.
Due to the unpaid salaries, a number of cooperative teachers have already stopped teaching at KU, while several others have also informed their hiring authorities and heads of their respective departments that if they are not paid on time, they will quit. ....

JONATHAN JANSEN | To Ace change, SA must step aside from believing empty words

JONATHAN JANSEN | To Ace change, SA must step aside from believing empty words
Words and phrases such as decolonisation and radical economic transformation have been bastardised
31 March 2021 - 19:43
South Africans are like Pentecostals. We repeat a word, a phrase, an acronym over and over until it has lost all meaning and simply becomes part of our belief system. In the process, we fall into the trap of thinking the word speaks reality into existence.
Will Ace “step aside”? My dictionary says that phrase means “to withdraw or resign from an important position or office”. It should be clear by now that the secretary-general of the ruling party has no intention of doing so. By giving him 30 days to make what should have been an instant decision, or face suspension, his party’s council gave him more than enough time to do what the cartoonist Zapiro sketched the other day: “sidestep” this halfhearted attempt to bring a big man to book. ....
