Traumatised students speak out: 'Too rich for funding, too poor for studying'


Laher said during her year as an SRC member, she witnessed too many students battle against too many odds.
“We have been fighting for free education for the longest time. And it was something that was in the Freedom Charter and it was something that was promised to students by the government. There was a policy that was supposed to be implemented in 2013 in regards to free education and its now 2021 and it has not been implemented yet.
“The issue always comes down to free decolonised education.
“It’s a fight we should not stop because education shouldn’t be something that excludes.” ....

Science writer Betsy Ladyzhets found a 56 percent increase in COVID-19 cases during the three-week period of in-person instructions in comparison to the three weeks before, when the universities offered remote learning. The piece also found that in the same counties where universities offered remote learning, COVID-19 cases dropped by almost 18 percent. The author states, “With these kinds of risks, a college campus seems like one more dangerous place to spend time.” ....

Students to shut down SA universities over govt funding

(Bloomberg) – A South African student movement plans to shut down the nation’s 26 state-owned universities until the government meets demands including clearing debt and allowing free registration for the 2021 academic year.
The step follows a weekend meeting of the South African Union of Students after protests on campuses including the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg last week left one person dead. Students began demonstrations after being prevented from registering because they failed to secure state subsidies or were in arrears on their fees.
The student movement has called for debt of R13bn ($874m) to be cleared, the allocation of funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, or NSFAS, to new students and for laptops to be provided as universities have moved their academic programmes online. ....

Ahluwalia Contracts gains on bagging order


Ahluwalia Contracts (India) rose 1.55% to Rs 304.70 after the company secured a new order aggregating to approximately Rs 128 crore.
The order has been awarded by the Construction Division-1, Building Construction Department, Patna (Bihar) for the construction of state guest house Bodh Gaya on engineering procurement basis (EPC).
The total order inflow during the FY 2020-21 stands at Rs 2,214.44 crore, the company said in a BSE filing made during market hours today.
Ahluwalia Contracts (India) s project portfolio encompasses projects across residential and commercial complexes, hotels, institutional buildings, hospitals and corporate offices, information technology (IT) parks and industrial complexes.
The company s consolidated net profit declined by 30.34% to Rs 14.72 crore on a 7.66% rise in net sales to Rs 536.13 crore in Q3 FY21 over Q3 FY20. ....
