'I Had a Vision': UK Sculptor Feels Call to Honor His Heritage in His Art

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 20, 2021)
For 15 to 20 years, artist Jeremy Colbert sculpted a successful career for himself in ceramics and metalworking. But it would take a series of visions, perchance dreams, to bring him to one subject matter of his work his heritage.
“I was very cautious on using Native American content in my artwork,” Colbert said. “… I was taking a nap. I woke up from that nap because I had a vision, and I literally got up, rolled over, drew something out on a little piece of paper that I could find. And on that piece of paper was this really beautiful looking totem sculpture that I dreamed about.” ....

Governor's School for the Arts to Return to In-person Classes at UK This Summer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 17, 2021) Kentucky Performing Arts has announced that the statewide arts education program for high school students, the Governor’s School for the Arts, will return to in-person and traditional instruction at the University of Kentucky this summer. One of many events and educational programs impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic that started in early 2020, last summer’s Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts was shifted to a successful online and nontraditional instruction.
The three week, arts-immersive program for rising high school sophomores and juniors across the state has for 34 years traditionally gathered hundreds of students on a Kentucky college campus to learn, collaborate and study various art forms. Students, educators and administrators have often noted the peer-support learning element of the program, with attendees connecting with like-minded peers and often leaving with new lifelong friends afterward. ....

More Than $700,000 Awarded to Aspiring UK Opera Stars in 2021 Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition

Talented graduate and undergraduate students from around the globe vied for the spotlight at the 2021 Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition presented virtually March 7. As part of the competition, vocalists competed for more than $700,000 in scholarships and prizes and an opportunity to join University of Kentucky Opera Theatre.
In the 16 years that we have been presenting the competition, this is probably the most talented field that we ve ever had. At both the entering undergraduate level and the entering graduate level, the talent is simply off the charts! I am so honored that Alltech and the University of Kentucky partners with us in this endeavor. The Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition has been a game changer for our program, said UK Opera Theatre Director Everett McCorvey of the UK School of Music. ....

Scholarship Honoring Alum Wayland Rogers to Support UK Art Song Students

The University of Kentucky’s College of Fine Arts and School of Music announced the creation of the Wayland Rogers Scholarship for Excellence in the Performance of Art Song.
The Rogers Scholarship was established by distinguished alumnus Wayland D. Rogers, a renowned singer, conductor, teacher and composer based in Chicago, Illinois, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music from UK in 1963. The scholarship will support senior music performance students who exhibit excellence in art songs or solo music with piano accompaniment.
Rogers, who was originally from Wayne County, Kentucky, held numerous faculty appointments at Northwestern University, Western Kentucky University, Loyola University Chicago, DePaul University, and the Music Institute of Chicago, served as artistic director and conductor of The Camerata Singers of Lake Forest, and served as music director of North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerf ....
