Knowing the carbon score of a product could encourage green purchases

Share
Knowing the environmental cost of a food product thanks to a label could encourage consumers to choose more ecological alternatives. However in order to have the desired effect, Scandinavian researchers have shown that such product labelling should be mandatory.
Certain brands such as Sweden-based Oatly, UK-based Quorn, and US-based Beyond Meat have been calculating the carbon footprint of their products and making this information available to the public, in some cases adding it to the label. Carbon footprint labels often reveal information about the manufacturing, packaging, transport and waste management of a product. And other large companies are considering it. Meanwhile some countries and commercial regions (such as the European Union) have considered introducing standardised labelling. ....

Brexit will have less financial impact on Danish seafood industry and employment than feared

Brexit will have less financial impact on Danish seafood industry and employment than feared
New calculations from the University of Copenhagen demonstrate that Britain’s adieu to the EU will have less of an impact on the Danish seafood industry and wholesale trade than feared. At worst, Brexit could lead to a clip in revenue of between 2.5 and 4.6 percent.
There has been considerable speculation about how Britain’s protracted divorce from the EU will affect the Danish seafood industry. Up until last year, Danish fishermen netted roughly a third of their catch in British waters. In the wake of Brexit, fears have flourished that access to these fishing grounds will be greatly limited. ....

Letting nature manage itself may lead to least costs - but EU ubsidies remain an obstacle

Letting nature manage itself may lead to least costs – but EU ubsidies remain an obstacle
Nature management through rewilding can be significantly more cost-effective than by traditional conservation measures. However, EU agricultural subsidies distort competition. This is the conclusion of an economic analysis headed by the University of Copenhagen.
Thirteen national parks have been planned for Denmark. The Danish government proposes that park management should be based on rewilding, a strategy that includes the reintroduction of key grazing animals such as bison, elk and red deer in large natural areas that will manage themselves. The concept has become a heated topic of debate. One of the arguments against rewilding is that its economic costs will be high. ....

But that argument does not always hold up, according to the first major economic analysis in this area. The analysis, led by the University of Copenhagen, compares the cost of rewilding in large contiguous natural areas with today’s most common type of nature conservation: extensive farming, with cows or sheep grazing on grassland. This type of conservation does not seem to have been able to halt biodiversity loss , which continues to shrink. On the other hand, numerous studies suggest that rewilding is a biologically more efficient method of management. ....
