CDK inhibitors may improve immune therapy effectiveness for recurrent breast cancer

Recurrent, metastatic breast cancer resists treatment and is usually fatal.
These tumors often have low numbers of immune cells in them, which renders immune therapies less effective for the disease.
This preclinical study suggests that drugs called CDK4 and CDK6 inhibitors may make immune-cell therapies an effective option for treating recurrent ER-positive metastatic breast cancer.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - A class of drugs that inhibits breast cancer progression when used with hormonal therapy might also boost the effectiveness of immune therapy in cases of recurrent, metastatic breast cancer, according to a new study led by researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC - James). ....

No Clarity for Role of Laser Therapy in Vulvar Lichen Sclerosus

email article
The status of laser ablation for vulvar lichen sclerosus remained unclear following two small randomized clinical trials that produced conflicting results.
In one study, fractionated carbon dioxide (CO
2) laser treatment led to significantly greater improvement compared with a topical steroid, according to assessment by the Skindex-29 dermatology qualify-of-life index. However, the trial was powered to detect a difference of 16 points on the Skindex-29, and the data showed a difference of 10.9 points.
After adjustment for prior steroid use, the difference in Skindex-29 score remained statistically significant only for patients with prior steroid exposure, reported Linda Burkett, MD, of Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Health System, and colleagues in ....

Top Macomb County officials say supply of vaccine is greater than demand
A press conference was held Tuesday at the county’s main vaccination site as officials shared what’s happening in their respective departments. But they really were there to push a message against vaccine hesitancy.
FERNDALE, Mich. - Michigan is still coming down from its latest coronavirus surge but the state is already eyeing what a summer without restrictions could look like.
It may be months before enough citizens have gotten their first vaccine shot that Michigan would remove its mask order, according to the governor s Mi Vacc to Normal plan. Some estimates believe that won t happen until August. ....

Earmarks are back.
The congressional practice of members essentially hand-picking projects was banned from Congress in the early 2000s after it became synonymous with “pork barrel” legislation. But it’s been given another chance under a new system.
Twenty-one members from Texas’ 35-member congressional delegation the 6th Congressional District in North Texas currently is open requested a total of close to $2 billion for fiscal 2022. Every Texas Democrat and eight Texas Republicans Reps. Texas CRISPR gene editing opens new battlefront against Duchenne MD

7 May 2021
Share:
Thirty five years ago the human gene that causes Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) was discovered. It was hailed as a light bulb moment in understanding the disease mechanism. However, there was little practical progress towards new treatments or therapies over the next two decades. Now, the rapid emergence of CRISPR gene editing technique is proving a game changer in the revised battleplan against the distressing condition.

Dystrophin, the rod-shaped protein which connects the cytoskeleton of a muscle fibre to the surrounding cell matrix through the cell membrane, lies at the heart of DMD enigma. ....
