With support from UKCCU, through a program called “A Scientific Advocacy Support Mechanism for Sustainable Development in Papua and West Papua”, CIFOR and partners are undertaking a number of activities aimed at supporting the provincial governments of Papua and West Papua in realizing their commitments as stated in the 2018 Manokwari Declaration, particularly in regard to food security and land-use planning.
In response to the West Papua Provincial Government’s need to assess the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on food security in West Papua, CIFOR has collaborated with the West Papua Provincial Research and Development Agency (Balitbangda) to conduct three surveys on disruptions to food systems. The first survey assesses general impacts on food value chains, the second survey assesses impacts on food producers living in forested areas, while the third survey assesses impacts on food consumers in West Papua.

Helping Papuans protect Indonesia's last frontier: Q&A with Bustar Maitar

Helping Papuans protect Indonesia’s last frontier: Q&A with Bustar Maitar
Bustar Maitar’s storied career in environmental activism began in the Indonesian region of Papua, the land of his birth and today the coveted target of extractives and industrial agriculture companies.
In his time at Greenpeace International, Maitar led a forest conservation campaign that pressured major corporations like Nestlé and Unilever to commit to zero deforestation in their supply chains.
Maitar’s new venture, the EcoNusa Foundation, brings him back to Papua, where it all began, to push for protecting the forests, waters and other ecosystems of this last pristine frontier in Indonesia.

Aquarium Eggs: Scientists Find Out How to Protect Endangered Zebra Shark

A leopard cannot change its spots, and a zebra cannot alter its markings. But with its ability to turn the white bands that it is born into spots as it ages, the zebra shark has long delighted ocean divers and aquarium tourists.

Zebra Shark Conservation
"Protecting and maintaining this rare and charismatic animal is very important to us," says Charlie Heatubun, a botanist at the University of Papua, Manokwari, and director of the West Papua Science and Development Agency of Indonesia, which is involved in the project.
The sharks, known as harmless to humans, swim slowly and spend much of their time in shallow coral environments have been decimated in recent years by the shark fin trade-populations of S. tigrinum. In 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) placed the shark on its Red List as vulnerable. It is now likely to be locally extinct in Indonesia in many regions.

A leopard can’t change its spots, and a zebra can’t change its stripes. But the zebra shark has long delighted ocean divers and aquarium visitors with its ability to transform the white bands it is born with into spots as it grows. Now, the endangered shark is grabbing attention for another reason: It’s at the center of an unprecedented effort to rebuild a wild shark population using eggs from aquariums.

New Guinea highland wild dogs are the original New Guinea singing dogs

Significance
New Guinea singing dogs (NGSD) are distinctive among the Canidae because of their unique and characteristic vocalization, isolated habitat, and status as a rare representative of wild dogs. Their scarcity, combined with the knowledge that none have been captured or exported since the late 1970s, supports the hypothesis that NGSD are extinct in the wild. We have analyzed the nuclear genome of the first dogs captured from the highlands of Papua in approximately 50 y. We provide DNA-based evidence for an ancestral relationship between highland wild dogs (HWD) and captive NGSD suggesting that the founding population of the NGSD is not, in fact, extinct and that HWD should be resourced for conservation efforts to rebuild this unique canid population.
