Some patients halted drugs for chronic conditions during pandemic

Most US patients saw an increase in days of supply (DOS) for medication for chronic conditions during the pandemic, but prescription data still showed an increased likelihood of drug discontinuation, according to a study published last week in
The researchers chose an example drug with available generics from six therapeutics classes less likely to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic: hormonal contraception, immunosuppression, serotonin regulation, and drugs to address attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and psychoses. They determined that patients had discontinued a drug if the DOS were not sufficient to cover a given month.
We heard all this news about how the rules were relaxing around refills [as the pandemic began], and we were like, Hey, this is great; people are able to access drugs, said corresponding author Jeffrey Clement, a University of Minnesota PhD candidate in information and decision sciences, reflecting on a ....

Russell M. Nelson, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is one of three people who will be getting honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Utah during the 2021 commencement ceremony in May. The commencement will be held virtually on May 6 to keep COVID-19 health guidelines.
Joining Nelson in getting honorary degrees from the U are education advocate C. Hope Eccles, and the father of biotechnology, William J. Rutter. In addition to leading more than 16 million members, 96-year-old Nelson was a world-renowned heart surgeon who helped pioneer open-heart surgery at a time when many believed that touching a human heart would cause it to stop beating, the University of Utah said in a news release. ....

Earl Lewis – The Conversation

Noted social historian, award-winning author, and educational leader, Earl Lewis, is the founding director of the University of Michigan Center for Social Solutions. Also the Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of History, Afroamerican and African Studies, and public policy, Lewis is president emeritus of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (2013-18), one of the premier philanthropies supporting the arts, humanities, and higher education. At Michigan, Lewis and colleagues in the center are addressing four core areas of social concern: diversity and race, slavery and its aftermath, water and security, and the dignity of labor in an automated world. Prior to returning to Michigan and before leading the Mellon Foundation, he served as the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Emory University as well as the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of History and African American Studies (2004-2012). Lewis was previously on the faculty at the University of Michiga ....

University of Minnesota Professor K. Andre Mkhoyan and his team used analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), which combines imaging with spectroscopy, to observe metallic properties in the perovskite crystal barium stannate (BaSnO3). The atomic-resolution STEM image, with a BaSnO3 crystal structure (on the left), shows an irregular arrangement of atoms identified as the metallic line defect core.

Conductive nature in crystal structures revealed at magnification of 10 million times

January 15, 2021
Using advanced analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) at a magnification of 10 million times, University of Minnesota researchers were able to isolate and image the structure and composition of the metallic line defect in a perovskite crystal BaSnO3. This image shows the atomic arrangement of both the BaSnO3 crystal (on the left) and the metallic line defect.
In groundbreaking materials research, a team led by University of Minnesota Professor K. Andre Mkhoyan has made a discovery that blends the best of two sought-after qualities for touchscreens and smart windows transparency and conductivity.
The researchers are the first to observe metallic lines in a perovskite crystal. Perovskites abound in the Earth’s center, and barium stannate (BaSnO3) is one such crystal. However, it has not been studied extensively for metallic properties because of the prevalence of more conductive materials on the planet like metals or se ....
