New UMaine special education leadership certificate available this fall

The University of Maine College of Education and Human Development and UMaineOnline will begin offering a new graduate certificate in Special Education Leadership this fall.
The Maine Department of Education lists Teacher of Students with Disabilities among the state’s teacher shortage areas. The new graduate certificate is designed to address an accompanying shortage of special education administrators. There are currently 242 special education directors in the state of Maine one for every 127 students with a disability. The 12-credit graduate certificate in special education leadership can lead to MDOE certification as an assistant administrator of special education.  ....

A new publication aims to bridge school-based and community-based support systems that promote behavioral health and wellness for Maine students and families.
The 15-page “Resource Guide for Maine Families, Schools, and Communities: Integrated Multi-Tiered Systems of Support” provides family friendly descriptions of services, information on how to access them, and outlines how to navigate the various supports in Maine, according to a news release from UMaine News, based in Orono.
Courtney Angelosante, lecturer in special education with the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development, is lead author of the guide. WVII (Channel 7) and Centralmaine.com reported on a new guide that highlights behavioral support networks in Maine for students, families and communities. Courtney Angelosante, lecturer in special education with the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development, is lead author of the guide. “We wanted to get information to families who might feel stuck, might feel alone, that might feel stigmatized,” she said. The Penobscot Bay Pilot also reported on the guide.
