In one test, the bonnetheads were tricked into thinking that they were located south of their home. In response, the sharks positioned themselves in a northerly direction, suggesting that they used the artificial magnetic field to orient themselves homeward.
“It had been unresolved how sharks managed to successfully navigate during migration to targeted locations,” said Keller, who is a researcher at the
Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory. “This research supports the theory that they use the Earth’s magnetic field to help them find their way; it’s nature’s GPS.” ....

The people of Laois are being urged to start making 10 switches to help foster biodiversity during National Biodiversity Week.
The Heritage Officers in Laois and other county councils hope everyone can start to make the switch on International Biodiversity Day is Saturday, May 22 and the theme this year is
“We are part of the solution for Nature”.
The Local Authority Heritage Officer Network says there are some simple switches that can be made that will set us on that pathway. Always the best place to start is where we can have the most influence, and for most of us that is our own homes and gardens. ....

One-size-fits-all agri-environment schemes act as a disincentive for farmers to carry out further improvements on their farms, project manager of the Wild Atlantic Nature EIP scheme Dr Derek McLoughlin has said.
He told a webinar on peatland management, hosted by An Fóram Uisce on Friday, that there is no facility for farmers to improve in such schemes.

Farm environment survey to measure biodiversity on 8,000 farms

A pilot farm environmental study (FES) is to be rolled out next year and will generate a database of baseline habitat and biodiversity data at farm level.
The Department of Agriculture aims to survey 8,000 farms in the second quarter of next year and farmers will be paid €200 for participating in the survey.
The survey will provide the farmer with an inventory of habitats, biodiversity and environmental information about his/her own farm.
The Department said that this information will then be presented to the farmer as part of the knowledge transfer element in order to educate and empower the farmer to farm in a way that is sensitive to nature on the individual farm. ....
