New climate-resistant coffee bean discovery has 'superior flavour'

Future proofing coffee
Coffee farming is under threat as global temperatures rise and extreme weather events affect areas where it is grown. However, experts believe that the newly rediscovered Stenophylla could be a game changer in terms of breeding resilient crops and providing a “superior flavour”.
Stenophylla thrives in hot-tropical areas at only 400m above sea level and is native to Guinea, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast. The hardy crop is thought to be drought-resistant.
“Future-proofing the coffee supply chain to deal with climate change is vital – coffee drives a multibillion dollar global industry, supports the economy of several tropical countries, and provides livelihoods for more than 100 million coffee farmers,” says Dr Aaron Davis, lead author of the report. ....

Newfound cuckoo wasp species mimics other insects' "language" to raise and feed its young

(Natural News)
European researchers discovered a new species of cuckoo wasps in Norway’s Lista peninsula. The newfound species is nearly identical and behaves similary to another kind of cuckoo wasps,
Chrysis brevitarsis, making it difficult to distinguish them from each other. Both are parasitic wasps that leech off other insects to feed their young.
In a paper published in the journal
Insect Systematics and Diversity, the researchers detailed how they were able to identify the newfound species using the chemicals they emit to communicate.
Identifying new cuckoo wasp species
Cuckoo wasps have a beautiful jewel-toned exterior and are notorious kleptoparasites. This means that they lay their eggs in the nests of bees and other wasp species and let their offspring, which grow faster and hatch before the host’s eggs, after which they devour their “siblings” and the food provided b ....

Marine life heading away from the equator could signal global mass extinction, scientists warn

https://www.afinalwarning.com/511103.html
(Natural News)
When it comes to biodiversity, the waters around the equator have long been miles ahead of most of the rest of the planet. The tropical waters are known for their rich and varied marine life, with creatures ranging from vibrant coral reefs, whale sharks and sea turtles to tropical tuna and manta rays.
Unfortunately, its reign appears to be coming to a close as scientists report a mass exodus of marine species from the area, and everyone on the planet could end up paying the price.
Researchers from the Universities of Queensland, Auckland and the Sunshine Coast are sounding the alarm bell about rising water temperatures in the areas surrounding the equator, which is causing species to head for cooler waters toward the polar regions in both directions. ....

Noise pollution poses long-term risk to trees, study shows

Noise pollution poses a long-term risk to tree populations and plant diversity that may persist even after the sources of excess noise are removed, according to research published Wednesday.
Manmade noise from construction, industry and the building of infrastructure such as roads and pipelines has increased dramatically since the middle of last century, and biologists are increasingly concerned about their impact on plants and animals.
While previous research has documented the short-term impact noise has on tree populations as it scares off pollinators such as insects and animals, few studies have investigated the long-term effects. ....

Asteroid that wiped out dinosaurs may have created the Amazon rainforest, study suggests

Science, the study also posits that the same asteroid created all of the Americas’ tropical rainforests.
Around 66 million years ago, a seven-mile-wide meteor struck what is now the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Named the Chicxulub impactor, the meteor produced clouds of dust and ash and catapulted fragments of rock into the sky, triggering widespread wildfires.
Over time, the devastating impact drove the extinction of around 75 percent of all plant and animal species on the planet, including all terrestrial dinosaurs. The disaster also drastically changed the environment across the globe.
But its effect on tropical forests is less clear compared to temperate ecosystems. ....
