Studying plankton with a digital holographic camera will help ecology

Studying plankton with a digital holographic camera will help ecology
Scientists from the Laboratory of Radiophysical and Optical Methods for Studying the Environment (TSU Faculty of Radiophysics) have found a way to determine the pollution of water bodies by studying plankton. The main tool is a digital holographic camera, which, placed in the water, can determine the size and shape of plankton and other particles, their speed, the number of individuals, and other parameters. Conclusions about the state of the reservoir and its biological diversity can be drawn from the data obtained.
– To record a hologram, you need to pass a laser beam through the volume of the medium and register it on a charge-coupled-device (CCD) camera. This will be the axial hologram of this volume of the medium, – explained Viktor Dyomin, TSU First Vice-Rector, head of the laboratory. – It differs from ordinary photography in that we can completely restore information about t ....

'Lunar Ark' Could Safeguard Millions of Species' DNA on The Moon

Lunar Ark Could Safeguard Millions of Species DNA on The Moon
HARRY BAKER, LIVE SCIENCE
14 MARCH 2021
A lunar ark hidden inside the Moon s lava tubes could preserve the sperm, eggs and seeds of millions of Earth s species, a group of scientists has proposed.
The ark, or gene bank, would be safely hidden in these hollowed-out tunnels and caves sculpted by lava more than 3 billion years ago and would be powered by solar panels above. It would hold the cryogenically preserved genetic material of all 6.7 million known species of plants, animals and fungi on Earth, which would require at least 250 rocket launches to transport to the Moon, according to the researchers. ....

In 2016, a collaborative group of research and education specialists received funding from the National Science Foundation for the project Building a Comprehensive Evolutionary History of Flagellate Plants also known as Genealogy of Flagellate Plants (GoFlag). Members of the team have the ambitious goal of reconstructing the 470-million-year history of one of the most diverse groups of land plants on the planet.
The first of several forthcoming publications from the project was published in a recent issue of ....

Restoring saltmarshes can boost tourism and create jobs, MPs told

Restoring saltmarshes will boost tourism and create jobs, MPs told
RSPB report looks at benefits of restoring saltmarshes, peatlands and woodlands and finds all add value to local economies
15 March 2021 • 4:15pm
Restoring saltmarshes will increase fish numbers and create opportunities to boost tourism activities including angling, the RSPB has said in a new report to MPs.
The report, presented to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Climate Change, argues that restoring saltmarshes is likely to enhance fish stocks for recreational and commercial purposes , with £4.60 returned for every £1 spent.
It says: Salt marshes provide nursery areas for juvenile fish. During tidal inundations, juvenile fish in the marsh represent a source of nutrition for fish predators. These are typically large sea fish, which are highly valued in the commercial fishing industry. ....
