Between bike riders, ice rink seekers, and even at one point school builders, the property at the corner of Green and Beacon streets has, as Marblehead Conservancy member Don Morgan put it, “risen from obscurity” in recent years.
But for Cloutman’s Lane resident Kathy Leonardson, the 5.5-acre parcel is a neighbor and one that is, that despite no buildings, already teeming with life.
After the Leonardsons bought their property in the mid-1990s, Kathy began to keep a log of the wildlife observed on their 3-acre plot. Morgan said since wildlife really knows no boundaries, it is safe to assume that whatever species Leonardson spotted in her backyard would also be found on the school-owned property known only as “Green Street Woods” on the Conservancy’s map. ....

The Marblehead Conservancy is taking a different approach to Earth Day this year due to COVID-19. Rather than the traditional volunteers planting wildflowers or conducting cleanups the Conservancy is providing kids with a passport for fun.
Mark you calendars for Saturday April 17 or 24th when the Conservancy will be offering activities and free materials aimed at encouraging kids of all ages to enjoy and learn about natural open space. The activities can be done by kids, families, or small groups anytime during the week of Earth Day, April 17-25 (and beyond). ....
