Funding in Place for Demolition on 19th Street in Wheeling | News, Sports, Jobs

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has approved funds for the asbestos abatement, environmental remediation and demolition of dilapidated warehouse buildings on 19th Street purchased by the city of Wheeling last year.
WHEELING The City of Wheeling is getting some funding help from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection to clear dilapidated warehouse buildings from the 19th Street property, which the city of Wheeling acquired last year.
City Manager Robert Herron reported to city council this week that the funding has been secured, and work should begin in the coming weeks to clean up environmental issues and raze the buildings. That came last Friday, he said. ....

Wheeling City Council Eyes New, $6.4 Million Fire Department Headquarters | News, Sports, Jobs

WHEELING City officials are looking at options for the location of a new Wheeling Fire Department headquarters, and a new ordinance being introduced at tonight’s city council meeting will initiate action to purchase a city block’s worth of property on 17th Street for that purpose.
The legislation will authorize Wheeling City Manager Robert Herron to carry out the terms of an option agreement for several parcels of property located at the intersection of 17th and Wood streets. The street addresses of the parcels included 164-188 17th Street.
According to the ordinance, the option agreement for the property purchase will be between the city and Gregory R. Gantzer of A.E. Pelley Plumbing and Heating. ....

WHEELING Mayor Glenn Elliott took the floor of the Wheeling City Council meeting Tuesday the first session to be held in person since last fall and called out members of the West Virginia Legislature pushing for the elimination of municipal use fees.
Members of Wheeling City Council, which for the greater part of the past year has met virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic, returned to council chambers Tuesday for the first time this year, and in fact, for the first time in many months.
While remarks from council members were relatively sparse, the mayor spoke at length in opposition of the recent effort in Charleston to eliminate municipal user fees. The city of Wheeling approved a $2 weekly user fee for people who work in the city in 2019, and the fee was implemented last year with the intention of raising funds for new headquarters for Wheeling’s police and fire departments, as well as funds for important infrastructure projects throughout th ....

Helping Heroes: a Center for Veterans Resources plans to enter into a temporary lease with the city of Wheeling for space on the former Ohio Valley Medical Center campus previously occupied by Hillcrest behavioral health.
WHEELING – City officials continue picking up new tenants for the former Ohio Valley Medical Center campus. The latest agency to move in is Helping Heroes: a Center for Veterans Resources.
The Development Committee of Wheeling City Council met this past week to discuss a proposal from Helping Heroes, a community-based nonprofit organization. The group provides support services and resources to homeless and near homeless veterans, as well as other veterans in need from the Northern Panhandle in Ohio, Brooke, Hancock, Marshall and Wetzel counties. ....

WHEELING Bluefield State College President Robin Capehart on Tuesday said the college is looking to fill a “critical” need for engineering technology programs in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle, and bringing a proposed Engineering and Manufacturing Center to a former hospital campus in Wheeling will do just that.
