Best stargazing places for Dark Sky Week: See Milky Way, meteors, planets over Arizona
Shaena Montanari, Arizona Republic
Stargazing is a naturally socially distant activity that can be done almost anywhere. While observatories with high-powered telescopes are great places to visit when you have the chance, stargazing can be done at any time with just your eyes and no extra equipment.
And now is the perfect time to go outside after dark and look up. International Dark Sky Week is April 5-12.
Many parts of Arizona are known for clear and dark skies, making the state the perfect place to see the Milky Way and planets like Jupiter and Saturn. The International Dark-Sky Association recognizes communities and parks as International Dark Sky Places when efforts have been made to make outdoor lighting night-sky friendly and prevent light pollution. ....

ASTRO-NOTES: Meteors, meteors, meteors coming our way in January

Meteors
The Coma Berenicids, running now through Saturday, Jan. 23, are the first shower of the year but they are guaranteed to be superseded by what will probably be the best shower of January, if not the year: the Quantarids, a.k.a. as the Bootids, from Friday, Jan. 1 to Tuesday, Jan. 5, peaking on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 120 per hour. The catch is that this is under a nearly full or full moon.
Two other showers also start on Friday, Jan. 1, the Gamma Velids, lasting until Friday, Jan. 15, with a peak of 2 per hour on Tuesday, Jan. 5. and the Delta Cancrids lasting until Sunday, Jan. 31, peaking Sunday, Jan. 17 at 3 per hour. ....

How to View Jupiter and Saturn's Rare Conjunction Over Arizona December 21

A busy year for skywatchers – including supermoons, meteor showers, and cometary flybys – is about to conclude with a rare sight.
On Monday, December 21, Jupiter and Saturn will get close enough together in the night sky that they’ll appear to form a single planet. It’s known as a “great conjunction” by astronomers and is a unique celestial event that occurs once every 20 years or so.
This particular conjunction will be even more special, and not just because it will happen during the winter solstice. According to astronomers, Jupiter and Saturn will appear to be less than a 10th of a degree apart, the closest they’ve been in almost 400 years. (The last time it occurred was in 1623 during the age of Galileo.) ....
