KENNEBUNK, Maine – Recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, improving communication, and increasing the district’s focus on children and curriculum were recurring themes when the six candidates for RSU 21 School Board were recently interviewed about their campaigns. Another theme that often popped up: all candidates are newcomers looking to step off the sidelines and onto the field to oversee the district during a challenging time in education. A change in the board s makeup is inevitable, as none of the four incumbents Michael Mosher and Gayle Asmussen Spofford of Kennebunk, Sarah Dore of Kennebunkport, and Devon Havey of Arundel decided to seek reelection this time around. ....

KENNEBUNK, Maine – As school districts consider whether to increase the number of days students can attend school in person, local families are sharing how the hybrid model of instruction has affected them. Some say the hybrid approach has worked well since the school year began in September. Others consider the model insufficient to meet students academic, social and emotional needs. Brandon Schiebel, 9, goes to Sea Road School four days a week, but that doesn t mean he s always in his classroom with his teacher or his peers. Brandon gets in-class instruction Mondays and Tuesdays, and he learns from home on Wednesdays, but on Thursdays and Fridays he learns remotely – not from home, but from the Sea Road School gymnasium. There, employees of the Kennebunk Recreation Department supervise him and other children, helping them set up their computers for their Zoom classes and making sure they keep on schedule. ....
KENNEBUNK, Maine – From now until June, Regional School Unit 21 will have a communications consultant whose focus will be delivering the latest developments in the district related to COVID-19, connecting schools and the community, and showcasing positive moments among students, faculty and staff. Jennifer Hass started her part-time, six-month position on Dec. 14. Since then, according to Superintendent Terri Cooper, she has issued press releases, visited schools, taken photos and worked on the district’s new website, which is expected to be ready in about six months. “We’re just excited about the enthusiasm she is bringing to the role and the enthusiasm she’s generating in the community by getting out those great, feel-good stories that were always happening but were going unnoticed,” Cooper told the RSU 21 School Board at its meeting on Monday, Jan. 4. ....
An outstanding smile. Filled with positive energy. An integral part of the community. Sunny. Bright. And, again, selfless. Selfless. That’s the word used repeatedly to describe Valerie Baker, 70, the special education teacher at the Middle School of the Kennebunks who passed away unexpectedly last Friday. In phone interviews, her son, Ryan, used the word, and so too did Baker’s colleagues, MSK Principal Marty Bouchard and RSU 21 Special Education Director Susan Martin. “Every one of her students mattered to her,” Martin said. “She took care of her school kids just like she took care of her own family. There was never a child she could not reach. She loved them all.” ....
