Instead, Peter Weir has decided Ballyhackett Primary School in Castlerock will close in August 2021. Documents published by the department showed the number of pupils at the school had fallen to 31 in 2020/21. As a result, Mr Weir has decided the school does not have sustainable numbers for the future . Its pupil numbers had almost doubled to 80 in the two years since plans for it to become an integrated school were first revealed in 2018/19. ....

It has been threatened with closure three times since 2014. In response to the proposal for integrated status, Mr Weir said: I do not believe the case for transformation for change can be approved as it is not robust enough to justify. Instead, he has approved the closure of the school, saying: Despite the great efforts of people locally, it is clear to me that on a number of grounds the school is unsustainable and that discontinuation is ultimately in the best interests of local students. ....
