Massena Central School District surveying families about school meal program


MASSENA — A survey is underway in the Massena Central School District to get more information from families about their participation in the school meal program.
The survey is being done as part of a Nutrition Hubs grant received by the district. Among the district’s objectives are to improve the school lunch program and increase student participation in the school meal program by 25% by November, and they need feedback from district parents and guardians to help with the effort.
“The big goal for the school will be to increase participation in the USDA lunch program the rest of this year and also increase our participation in our free and reduced lunch program for next year,” Community Schools Director Kristin Colarusso-Martin told Board of Education members in January. ....

Massena Central School District exploring use of junior high as official food pantry


MASSENA — The paperwork is set to go and waiting for approval to make J.W. Leary Junior High School an official food pantry.
“I think we have a great plan, and pending board (of education) approval, our application is ready to go. (Principal Amanda Zullo) and her team at the junior high and I have really been having a great time at brainstorming this,” Community Schools Director Kristin Colarusso-Martin said.
She said some high school students were coming to school hungry, but there was no after-school snack program available.
“We can’t have the after-school snack program this year because we can’t have after-school programming thanks to COVID,” Ms. Colarusso-Martin said. ....
