Dredge Contractor Turns Up Cannons, Anchor While Working In Savannah River

As one of the dredge contractors working on the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project, Weeks Marine crewmembers are used to dredging up plenty of sand and other material as the Savannah Engineer District oversees the deepening of the harbor from 42 to 47 feet.
Cannon dredged from Savannah Harbor likely predates the Civil War.
But in late February, the crew turned up something far more rare and archaeologically significant. While working in the vicinity of Old Fort Jackson, a 19th-century fort built in the years leading up to the War of 1812, located just a couple miles east of the city of Savannah, the crew unearthed several cannons, an anchor and a timber, all likely dating to well before the Civil War. ....

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A recent discovery in the Savannah River has stirred up a lot of questions and speculation.
Although the Army Corps of Engineers may have stumbled across the Pre-Civil War artifacts accidentally, their search for answers has come with clear intent.
“This was an exciting find while we were doing regular maintenance dredging to ensure the Savannah River stays navigable for some of the large ships coming in,” said U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Archaeologist Andrea Farmer. ....

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Coastal Heritage Society closed all of its sites last year due to the pandemic, and for the first time since the closures, they are inviting guests back in March.
On Thursday, March 4, all CHS historic sites and museums will reopen to the public with the following new business hours.
The Georgia State Railroad Museum, Savannah History Museum, and Old Fort Jackson will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ....
