Coastal News Today | CA - Scripps Oceanography Maps 'Massive … Very Dangerous Problem' of DDT Waste Site Off SoCal Coast

The barrels sit 12 miles out to sea from Palos Verdes toward Santa Catalina Island.
Supervisor Janice Hahn recommended sending a letter to EPA Administrator Michael Regan urging him to do an assessment and move quickly on the cleanup.
“This is such an appalling discovery,” Hahn said. “It’s an alarming situation for all of our natural resources … DDT is notorious for harming wildlife, including falcons, eagles and fish.”
Sonar imaging of the area by Scripps and NOAA, which took place in March, shows vast trails of debris extending across an area the size of San Francisco.
The findings came after the ....

For decades, thousands of barrels of DDT were dumped in the deep ocean between Catalina Island and Palos Verdes, and authorities are only just beginning to understand the extent of the newly mapped dumpsite. (Shutterstock / Andy Konieczny)
PALOS VERDES, CA The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to press the Environmental Protection Agency to expedite the clean-up of 27,000 barrels of toxic sludge dumped between Palos Verdes and Catalina Island.
Though the barrels of the banned pesticide DDT have been rusting at the bottom of the ocean for decades, scientists only recently discovered and began mapping a toxic dump site the size of San Francisco. The discovery helps explain why the suspected carcinogen is persistently found in Southern California s marine life and coastal waters nearly 50 years after it was banned. It also raises a new challenge: how to safely remove it and who should foot the bill. ....

How scientists uncovered a massive underwater waste dump off of L.A.

A sprawling dumpsite off the Los Angeles coast, littered with barrels of waste, had been mostly hidden from the public eye for over half a century. Now, marine scientists revealed the field of submerged waste, some of it likely toxic.
They detected around
27,000 barrels.
Over two weeks in March, scientists with NOAA and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography dropped two autonomous underwater vehicles (they look like small submarines) into the ocean, approximately 12 miles off the coast. The researchers knew barrels holding waste laden with toxic chemicals like DDT were down there: Limited, though telltale footage and past records hinted at the magnitude of last century s massive dumping campaign. But the robots, using sonar technology to scour 36,000 acres of the seafloor, proved it. ....

Soaring sea lion cancer linked to secret ocean dumping ground of 25,0000 barrels of DDT off California

Sea lions in California are dying from cancer at an unprecedented rate, potentially linked to thousands of toxic chemical barrels dumped in the Pacific Ocean decades ago.
On Monday marine scientists revealed they had discovered what appears to be those barrels, possibly containing the toxic substance dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane, known as DDT, off Southern California.
Some 27,345 “barrel-like” images were captured from a research vessel by a team from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California San Diego, who mapped more than 36,000 acres of seafloor between Santa Catalina Island and the Los Angeles coast. ....
