YORK, Pa. Pennsylvania will be receiving 4.5 billion in emergency relief funding for schools across the commonwealth.
Some educators want some of that money to be used for programs that have been shown to increase diversity in schools.
“Let’s invest some funds into what it would take to diversify the teacher pipeline. We not only need teachers but also school leaders of color to join the workforce, said Dr. Tanya I. Garcia, the Acting Deputy Secretary and Commissioner for Postsecondary and Higher Education at the PA Dept. of Education.

As mask mandates are relaxing for vaccinated people across the nation, school districts in Pennsylvania are awaiting guidance from the state s Department of Education on how to move forward with masks inside the classroom. While we are still awaiting official guidance from the PA Department of Education, with the school year coming to an end, we don’t see the mask mandate being lifted within our schools before the summer break. Furthermore, from what we have heard, even if school boards are allowed to offer their own guidance in this area, they will continue the mask mandate, at least for now, said Carol Yeagy of The Keystone Teachers Association.

Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Kerry Benninghoff has a message for the state s school systems: Show me the money.

In an interview on the Chris Stigall radio show, Benninghoff was asked about the $129 billion of federal education funding in President Biden s proposed COVID-19 relief plan. Like many Republicans, he noted only 5 percent of the emergency funding for schools will be spent this fiscal year. In fact, more of the money will be spent in 2025, after the pandemic is over, than in the next 12 months.
Benninghoof went on to note that schools in the Keystone State have actually fared relatively well on the funding side and using money as an excuse for keeping classrooms closed, he said, doesn t add up.

The group is calling on parents and others with a stake in school safety to walk out, asking parents who don t agree with the new guidance to keep their kids home, not log them in, on March 3.
The group, DASD Community for Metrics, Safety and Stable Learning Environment, is organizing the walkout and asking parents who are concerned about moving to a 3-feet distancing standard to show their concern by keeping kids home.
