President signs bills into law to facilitate trade, improve Senate recruitments

President Dr Arif Alvi on Friday signed into law the Pakistan Single Window Bill 2021 and Senate Secretariat Services (Amendment) Bill 2021. Under the Pakistan Single Window Act, an independent institution having a governing council and secretariat would be established for the facilitation of national and international trade. The new law will provide a coordinated one-window system to facilitate exports, imports and transit trade. Establishment of an independent institution, besides reducing the cost of doing business, will also help ease cross border trade and transportation of goods. The institution will also help in timely processing of data and bring about improvement in the provision of quality services. ....

ISLAMABAD: As the Senate met on Monday for its first regular session of a new parliamentary year, Leader of Opposition Yusuf Raza Gilani vowed to carry with him the entire opposition and also become voice of the government, whereas the PML-N pledged to play its independent role as a real opposition.
The new session was marred by loud charges and counter-charges from some senators of the opposition benches and those in the treasury, who had apparently supported Gilani to become opposition leader. The opposition was divided, mainly into two groups and hence the PDM internal rift reached the Senate. There was a strong demand from the PML-N for investigation into the installation of spy cameras during the Senate elections of chairman and deputy chairman. ....

ISLAMABAD: The China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority Bill, 2020 and two other bills sailed through the National Assembly amid strong protest and sloganeering from the opposition members on Monday.
The opposition members gathered in front of Speaker’s dais while raising slogans ‘release speaker’, ‘wake-up speaker’ and ‘give relief to people’ as government members okayed the bill moved by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan in the House.
The opposition members threw the torn apart copies of the bill towards speaker’s dais while the House also passed the Public Private Partnership Authority Bill, 2020 and the Pakistan Single Window Bill, 2021. ....

ISLAMABAD: Helped by National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, the government on Monday hurriedly passed three bills, including the one seeking establishment of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority, amid ruckus by the opposition members.
Besides the passage of the bills, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan also laid two ordinances, including the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Ordinance 2020, before the house as the opposition members continued their noisy protest in front of the dais of the speaker after he refused to give them the floor to speak on the issue of price hike with particular reference to the recent increase in prices of electricity and petroleum products. ....
