Educationist Dr Zillur Rahman passes away


He was the Rosebush Professor Emeritus of University of Wisconsin in USA.
Even  after his retirement from the university and moving to Florida, he  continued teaching for a number of years as an adjunct professor at  Rollins College near Orlando.
Zillur Rahman received numerous  awards including Willard Smith Distinguished Teaching Award at the  departmental level, Rosebush Professorship Award at the university  level, and was recognised twice by American Political Science  Association for Excellence in Teaching and Research.
Recognising  his contributions to political science focusing mainly on South Asia,  the Foreign Affairs Committee of US Congress invited him to testify in a  Congressional Hearing (100th Congress) on Democratisation of Bangladesh  and Afghanistan in 1988. ....

The metaphor of NET building -- the day Nigeria stopped her advance


So, the other day, a young brother of mine posted an aerial picture on his Facebook page of the NECOM Building (or NET Building), with the caption ‘the tallest building in Nigeria’. As I admired the aerial view, I was taken aback. What?!! NET Building is STILL the tallest in Nigeria? This could be the perfect metaphor confirming that Nigeria is not improving, has become ambitionless, has stopped growing, literally, since NET building was completed in 1979.

Now, Nigeria External Telecommunications (NET) Building as it was first known – before the rechristening to whatever name it bears today – was then an iconic building and a symbol of our progress, ambition, independence, creativity, modernity, and quest for achievement back in the late 70s.
