At Nature Canada, Teagan Yaremchuk, 28, supports community groups across Canada to harness the power of nature to overcome the climate crisis.
Tell us about your work.
Left unchecked, climate change will undermine Nature Canada’s efforts to protect the environment. When communities protect and restore their own natural areas, these “nature-based climate solutions” can reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). My job is to support local communities to make the changes they need.
Since February 2020, we have engaged thousands of people around this idea, many who represent our network of over 900 organizations. So far, over 100 groups have asked for our help. ....

Montrealers love to skate. There are 250 rinks in the city, five within a three-block radius of my home. For 50 days a year or more each winter after work, each day and all day on weekends they are crowded. We have a city-wide love affair with skating. Whether we are playing pickup hockey or freestyle exercising together, regardless of our ages or abilities, with our hot chocolate or coffee, it is part of being a Montrealer. ....

The 1990s were personally tough for me. I spent the decade immersed in action based on climate catastrophe science, trying, and by all accounts failing, to stem the tide. Hardest of all, death and dementia came to my family.
As my awareness deepened about the growing divide between young and old and rich and poor, grief had become a pretty constant companion. I could choose to go further into the abyss of fear and loss or choose the only thing stronger: love. To choose love is to hope. But I had forgotten how. So I made a resolution one that could last a year or even a decade if need be. I chose to study hope. ....
