Survey seeks public input for Village of Potsdam Police Advisory Committee work on reform plan

POTSDAM – The Village of Potsdam Police Advisory Committee is seeking feedback from a public survey to help inform the committee’s ongoing work to develop a police reform plan as required by the governor’s Executive Order 203.
The survey can be found online at https://forms.gle/X4sVBw8iDQZBJFuH7 .
The goal of this committee’s work is to review the department’s practices, processes, and engagement with the community, and to provide recommendations, said a press release on the village website.
These recommendations, according to the governor’s order, shall be “tailored to the specific needs of the community and general promotion of improved police agency and community relationships based on trust, fairness, accountability, and transparency, and which seek to reduce any racial disparities in policing.” ....

North country women in politics: Despite strides, aim is to break new barriers in 2021 elections


CANTON — The tri-county region is preparing for the upcoming election season, highlighting women who have broken barriers in local government and how they are encouraging others to pursue the same path — to run for office and make a difference in their communities.
Women are achieving record numbers of representation in politics, but despite these strides, women still hold only 39% of local government seats, according to government data reported by Represent Women.
The upcoming election season, with primary elections on June 22 and Election Day on Nov. 2, will feature roughly 300 elections in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
In 2008, 33% of people who ran for local government positions in Jefferson County were women, while in 2019, 40% of those who ran were women. Likewise, in 2003, 237 candidates ran for local government in St. Lawrence County, but only 27% of them were women. Nearly 16 years later in 2019, 33% of the candidates were women. ....

HANNAWA FALLS Helping Hands of Hannawa Falls received one of its largest donations ever recently from a “Secret Santa” recently.
Helping Hands of Potsdam Board member and volunteer Betty Connolly went to the post office in Hannawa Falls this past Tuesday, and imagine her surprise when one of the checks she picked up to deposit for Helping Hands was for $10,000,” said Helping Hands Executive Director Tom Chappell.
He said the anonymous donation was mailed to Helping Hands by a local Potsdam CPA, but there was no information accompanying the donation, except a note from the accountant stating that their client had received an unexpected windfall and wanted to spread some Christmas cheer. ....
