Survey seeks public input for Village of Potsdam Police Advisory Committee work on reform plan

POTSDAM – The Village of Potsdam Police Advisory Committee is seeking feedback from a public survey to help inform the committee’s ongoing work to develop a police reform plan as required by the governor’s Executive Order 203.
The survey can be found online at https://forms.gle/X4sVBw8iDQZBJFuH7 .
The goal of this committee’s work is to review the department’s practices, processes, and engagement with the community, and to provide recommendations, said a press release on the village website.
These recommendations, according to the governor’s order, shall be “tailored to the specific needs of the community and general promotion of improved police agency and community relationships based on trust, fairness, accountability, and transparency, and which seek to reduce any racial disparities in policing.” ....

Editorial — Let them hear you: Residents need to become involved in police reform process

Two municipal governments recently joined other communities in seeking input from their constituents as they work their way through the police reform process as mandated by the state.
Lewis County held an online âlistening sessionsâ for residents to provide feedback Wednesday. People may watch the video of the meeting on the countyâs YouTube channel.
Potsdam launched an online survey for residents to fill out. People can access the survey at https://forms.gle/X4sVBw8iDQZBJFuH7. It will be available through March.
Itâs important for people to let village officials know their thoughts on this process as the committee in Potsdam had two Black members resign because they didnât believe their concerns were being taken seriously. Getting as many people in the community on the same page so that improvements can proceed is essential. ....
