2021 Tokyo Olympics - Runners on the Refugee Olympic Team

IOC Media
In less than a week, athletes from across the globe will convene in Tokyo for the 2021 Olympics. And for the second time ever, the Games will feature a refugee team, set to include seven runners out of a total of 29 athletes, which is noticeably larger than the 10 refugee athletes who competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
In 2014, Tegla Loroupe, who competed at the 1992, 1996, and 2000 Olympics, and was the first African woman to win the New York City Marathon in 1994, petitioned the International Olympic Committee to create the refugee team in time for the 2016 Olympics. She was successful and went on to become the team’s Chef de Mission. Loroupe was no stranger to the athletic potential refugees could bring, as she’d been promoting peace through sport through the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation, which she created in 2003. ....

100 ones to watch in Tokyo: long distance | SERIES

Still aged only 21,
Selemon Barega has already achieved a lot within the sport. He has won world U18 and U20 titles and has reached the 5000m finals at two senior World Championships, placing fifth in 2017 at the age of 17 and second in 2019 while still a teenager. His 5000m PB of 12:43.02, meanwhile, is a world U20 record and places him fifth on the world all-time list.
He started the year with an impressive 27:58.5 clocking for 10,000m at altitude in Addis Ababa, the fastest time ever achieved in Ethiopia. He then worked on sharpening his speed, setting PBs of 3:32.97 for 1500m and 7:26.10 during the indoor season. That heady mix of beastly endurance and strong finishing speed means Barega will be a danger in championship races. ....

They have certainly made a name for themselves in athletic circles, but theirs is a meteoric rise from obscurity to global fame in marathon.
Their spectacular rise –without taking part in track races as is always the tradition – has wowed the sporting world.
It’s an interesting statistic, though. From former world marathon record holders Wilson Kipsang and Dennis Kimetto to world 21km women-only record holder Peres Jepchirchir and world women’s 21km mixed race record holder Brigid Kosgei; their scripts defy the perfect definition of your typical Kenyan athlete. ....

Half marathon world record holder Kandie eyeing 10,000m at Tokyo 2020

Half marathon world record holder Kandie eyeing 10,000m at Tokyo 2020
Monday, 11 January 2021
Kenya s half marathon world record holder, Kibiwott Kandie, has announced his intention to compete in the 10,000 metres at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, eyeing a medal.
He will look to end Kenya s long run without an Olympic gold in the men s 10,000m, which dates all the way back to the Mexico City 1968 Games thanks to the efforts of Naftali Temu.
Kenya has not won the 10,000m world gold in 20 years, since Charles Kamathi was victorious in Edmonton in 2001.
Kandie looks to end that streak at the Games, but will face competition from Uganda s 5,000m and 10,000m world record holder Joshua Cheptegei. ....
