Nine Mine Workers Found Dead After Explosion in China -- Occupational Health & Safety


A Jan. 10 gold mine explosion killed 10 workers, while one is still missing.

The bodies of nine workers were recovered in a Chinese gold mine on January 25 after explosions occurred at the mine earlier this month, according to The Star Tribune.
There were two explosions at the Yantai city mine an hour and a half apart on Jan. 10. The cause of the explosions is unknown, but is currently being investigated. The nine deceased workers were found 1,320 feet underground.
“Until this worker is found, we will not give up,” said Yentai city Mayor, Chen Fei.
On Jan. 24, 11 surviving workers were rescued from 70 tons of debris. One worker is still missing and unaccounted for. Local authorities have detained managers of the mine for not immediately reporting the accident. ....

The state of Maryland fined Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) more than $437,000 on Jan. 7 for safety violations that resulted in a 2019 gas explosion, according to The Baltimore Sun.
The Public Service Commission of Maryland (PSC) ordered BGE to pay two installments of $218,647 for its violation of electric and gas regulations. The fine must be paid within 15 business days. BGE must also follow a remediation plan to upgrade gas lines, which is estimated to cost $17 million. ....

President-elect Joe Biden announced the choices for the remaining slots on his economic team on January 7, according to The New York Times.
Boston mayor Martin J. Walsh was named labor secretary, while Rhode Island governor Gina Raimondo was named commerce secretary. Isabel Guzman, who worked in the Obama administration, will be head of the Small Business Administration.
The labor and commerce secretaries have the ability to impact factors such as worker safety and protection. The Small Business Administration directs pandemic-related programs such as the Paycheck Protection Program, which aids small businesses. ....

Employees Filed Hundreds of Worker Safety Lawsuits in 2020 -- Occupational Health & Safety

Over 1,000 work-related lawsuits were filed in 2020 since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, according to USA Today.
Between 1,005 and 1,425 workplace lawsuits have been filed in connection to COVID-19, with more expected to surface this year. Of the lawsuits, 690 pertained to layoffs and firings.
About 200 of the lawsuits dealt with workplace safety. Employees that filed the lawsuits claimed they were not given adequate PPE, nor did their employers comply with sanitation protocols, mask-wearing or temperature checks.
In addition to these worker safety lawsuits being filed last year, OSHA issued coronavirus citations that resulted in $3.8 million in penalties. ....
