Social activist Ruth Dayan passed away early Friday morning at the age of 103. She was the first wife of Chief of Staff and Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, and founder of the fashion and textile company Maskit and the charity Variety Israel.
Ruth Schwartz was born in Haifa in 1917, the daughter of Jewish newcomers in the Second Aliyah. Her sister, Reuma, married Ezer Weizman, founder and chief of the Israel Air Force, Defense Minister, and President. Ruth married Moshe Dayan in 1935 and divorced him in 1971. They had three children: Yael Dayan, a former Knesset member and Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv; Ehud (Udi) Dayan, a writer; and Asaf “Assi” Dayan, an actor and filmmaker. ....

Ruth Dayan, veteran peace activist, dies at 103

Ruth Dayan, a social and peace activist died on Friday at age 103, a month before of her 104th birthday. Dayan was the first wife of former IDF chief of staff and Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, and the mother of filmmaker Assaf (Assi) Dayan, former Knesset member and deputy mayor of Tel Aviv Yael Dayan and sculptor Ehud (Udi) Dayan.
She will be buried on Sunday in the cemetery of Moshav Nahalal, where she, in her own words, spent the happiest years of her life. The funeral will be broadcast live on YouTube, starting at 12 noon in Israel (5 A.M. EST). ....

On October 10, 1973, the fifth day of the Yom Kippur War, just four days after the surprise attack on Israel by Egypt and Syria, Prime Minister Golda Meir warned of dire strategic consequences from the war.
“I’ve been living since the beginning of the fighting with the feeling that we can’t end up in a situation in which around the world they say, ‘That’s that. What we had thought about Israel and the Israeli army – it’s over,’” she remarked at a meeting on military and diplomatic issues.
The prime minister noted that U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger had told the Israeli ambassador to Washington at the time, Simcha Dinitz: “You have to win.” ....
