ST PAUL, Minn With an eye toward the upcoming murder trial of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, Governor Tim Walz is calling on lawmakers to set up a special fund to help local cities pay for the cost of responding to civil unrest and other major events that require a multi-agency response.
At the same time Gov. Walz and DPS Commissioner John Harrington brief the media Wednesday, Capitol Republicans were also pushing back against the plan because it could potentially ease the financial burdens of the City of Minneapolis. ....

Thirty-four days before the trial of Derek Chauvin, Gov. Tim Walz is seeking $35 million from taxpayers to pay for law enforcement to keep the peace during the Chauvin’s trial.
Chauvin stands accused of killing George Floyd last May.
The Walz administration is pursuing the creation of the $35 million State Aid for Emergencies Account (SAFE).
Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, R-Nisswa, immediately rejected Walz s proposal.
“We are not going to bail out Minneapolis city council after they have made cuts to the public safety budget,” Gazelka said in a statement. ....

In response to Gov. Tim Walz s proposal to establish a fund to help pay for law enforcement mutual aid costs during extraordinary civil unrest, Senate Republicans say the cost should come from cities local government aid.
