A-bomb survivors seek a nuke-free world. Experts say that is unrealistic.

As the 76th anniversaries of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki approach, survivors of the catastrophe are pinning their hopes on Japan joining a U.N. treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons that took effect in January, seeing it as a key step in realizing their dream of a nuclear-free world.
But some experts say the goal is unrealistic for Japan as nuclear threats continue to grow in the region while an existing nonproliferation treaty is not working properly amid growing tensions between the United States and fellow nuclear superpowers Russia and China.
Terumi Tanaka, 87, a co-chairperson of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo), insists that Japan, the only country to have experienced nuclear attacks, should approve the treaty signed by 86 countries, criticizing the government for making “a foolish choice” not to join it. ....

New Permanent Representative of Lithuania Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations, Rytis Paulauskas, presented his credentials to the Secretariat today.
Before his latest appointment, Mr. Paulauskas was Director of the Communications and Cultural Diplomacy Department of his country s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a position to which he was appointed in August 2016.
He was Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva between August 2012 and July 2016; Director of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Chairmanship Department and Head of the OSCE Chairmanship Task Force from 2008 to 2012; and Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, OSCE, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other international organizations in Vienna from November 20 ....

Ministry of Foreign Affairs for International Affairs Undersecretary Dr Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa met with the head of the NATO Middle East and North Africa Section of the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division, Giovanni Romani.
Shaikh Abdullah affirmed Bahrain’s keenness to promote partnership with NATO within the framework of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, praising the great efforts made by the alliance in maintaining international peace and security and confronting traditional and emerging threats.
He noted the constructive and positive results of the two previous version of the Individual Partnership and Cooperation Programme between Bahrain and NATO, especially in the areas of political and diplomatic cooperation, and the exchange of experiences in defence and security fields. ....

Declassified diplomatic documents from the late 1980s released Dec. 23 by the Foreign Ministry offer a rare glimpse into concerns raised by U.S. President Ronald Reagan about China’s missile exports to the Middle East. 
The archive mainly deals with the period around the end of the Cold War.
Correspondence between Reagan and Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita also reveals that the U.S. president not only raised his concerns about the missile exports directly with Chinese supreme leader Deng Xiaoping but also asked Takeshita to bring up the issue when he visited China to meet with Chinese leaders. ....
