Passengers tell of panic and fear after plane diverted by Belarus

The first the passengers on flight FR4978 from Athens knew that anything was out of the ordinary was when the Ryanair Boeing 737-800, on a scheduled flight to the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, went into a dramatic dive 10 minutes before it was due to land.
“We all on the plane panicked, because we thought we were going to crash,” Lithuanian passenger Raselle Grigoryeva, told ABC News. While the pilot announced an emergency diversion to Minsk, no explanation was given. ....

Holidaymakers in England, Scotland and Wales have been given the green light for trips abroad. Travel is restricted to a small number of countries but the early signs are that they are proving popular with those desperate for a change of scene – this week Tui announced it would be putting on bigger planes to meet demand for trips to Portugal. Bookings for flights to the island of Madeira rose by 625% straight after the green list of countries was announced, according to the website Skyscanner, while demand for Gibraltar leapt by 335%. ....

At the weekend, the federal health minister, Greg Hunt, announced the government would bar people – including citizens and permanent residents – from coming to Australia from India.
The decision prompted a storm of criticism, including from the Australian Human Rights Commission, as Australians came to grips with an extreme use of a power most didn’t know existed.

The India travel ban is made under section 477 of the Biosecurity Act, which gives health minister Greg Hunt extraordinary powers in the event of ‘a human biosecurity emergency period’. ....

Cities across New Zealand are putting out the welcome mat for Australian arrivals, as trans-Tasman bubble travel begins.
From the air, arrivals to Wellington could see the words “Welcome Whānau”, the Māori term for family, painted in enormous letters next to the runways.
Duty-free stores have re-stocked shelves and rolled up the barriers, many opening for the first time in around a year.
At Auckland airport, a choir warmed up for a rendition of Welcome Home, by Dave Dobbyn, and families waited to greet new arrivals, who landed just after 12.30pm. ....
