Gorakhpur doctor Kafeel Khan has been added to a list of 81 history-sheeters, or persons with a criminal record, in the Uttar Pradesh district, and the police have said they will remain on their radar, reported PTI on Saturday. The names were added to the list on the instruction of Senior Superintendent of Police Jogendra Kumar.
In Gorakhpur district, there are a total of 1,543 history-sheeters. Kafeel Khan’s brother Adeel Khan told PTI that the criminal record against the doctor began on June 18, but the information was made available on Friday.
In a video message tweeted on Saturday, Kafeel Khan confirmed that his name was included in the list of 81 history-sheeters in the district. “The UP government has opened my history-sheet. They say that they will monitor me for life,” he said. “Good, give two security guards who will keep an eye on me for 24 hours. At least, I will be able to save myself from fake cases.”

[LISTEN] SA Caught Napping to Secure Cheaper Prices for AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine
Jan 22, 2021
A lecturer at the Department of Pediatrics at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College in India says South Africa was caught napping and failed to secure a cheaper price for the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Kafeel Khan was speaking to Radio Islam on Friday from Gorakhpur about the 1.5 million shots of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine from the Serum Institute of India (SII), which is headed to our shores before the end of the month.
South Africa will pay $5.25 (R77.67) per dose of the vaccine.
The country is hosting clinical trials of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca in partnership with Oxford University, raising questions about the higher price it will be paying.

NEW DELHI: Ever since Dr Kafeel Khan went out of his way to take charge and stem the calamity unfolding at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College at Gorakhpur his life has taken a turbulent turn. Hailed as a hero by sections of the media for saving the lives of children impacted by the sudden disruption of the oxygen supply, Khan evoked a strong anti reaction from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath that seems to have been on play these long three years.
Khan who has spent two long stints in jail for speaking up for justice, and addressing meetings across the country, was released this time around on February 10,2020 by an Aligarh court but arrested immediately three days later under the National Security Act. He was released finally on September 1, 2020 by the Allahabad High Court and all charges under NSA against him were dropped.

SC dismisses plea against HC order that freed Dr Kafeel Khan | India News

AGRA/LUCKNOW: The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed an appeal by the Uttar Pradesh government against the Allahabad high court order that had quashed Dr Kafeel Khan’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA) in September.
We see no reason to interfere, a three-judge bench of Chief Justice of India S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian said. Criminal cases against Khan will be decided on their own merits , the bench added.
Khan had been held at Mathura jail for seven months after he delivered a speech during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at Aligarh Muslim University which the government deemed provocative . The high court had, while allowing his release, observed that his speech does not disclose any effort to promote hatred or violence . It, instead, gives a call for national integrity and unity… (and) deprecates any kind of violence .

The Uttar Pradesh government has approached the Supreme Court, seeking to challenge the Allahabad High Court’s order quashing the detention of Dr Kafeel Khan under the National Security Act,
Live Law reported on Saturday. The Adityanath-led government filed a special leave petition on October 26, and the matter is to be listed before the Supreme Court on December 17.
In September, the Allahabad High Court had revoked the charges under the National Security Act against Khan. He had been in custody since January 29 for making allegedly inflammatory remarks during a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act at the Aligarh Muslim University in December last year. The court in its order had said that Khan’s speech did not “disclose any effort to promote hatred or violence” and had termed the three extensions of his detention as illegal.
