Bobby Jones nature trails closing next week | Sarasota

Outdoors enthusiasts who have used the nature trails at Bobby Jones Golf Club over the last year will need to find a substitute location until summer as initial work begins preparing the property for renovation.
Beginning May 10, the trails will be off limits until July 4 as structures and tennis courts on the property are demolished, though on-course restrooms and the maintenance building will remain. A new 18-hole golf course, a nine-hole executive course, a rebuilt clubhouse and public parkland are all part of the plans for the remade property.
According to a release from the city, City Commissioners are scheduled to consider proposals and options this summer for future golf operations. Also, negotiations are continuing with the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast to place a conservation easement on the 293-acre property, preserving the land for golf, recreation and natural uses. ....

That s what filmmaker Colin Reid ordered during his first visit to G s Southern Kitchen in 2019 after the soul food restaurant opened at Bobby Jones Golf Club.
It was delicious, he said.

Reid was familiar with charismatic chef and restaurateur Gordon Gregory from his time at the popular Nancy s Bar-B-Q restaurant.
It was Gregory s charisma and personality coupled with the story of how the pandemic shut down the golf course and eventually caused the restaurant to lose its brick-and-mortar space that led to Reid filming a short documentary about G s Southern Kitchen. The film, also called G s Southern Kitchen, is part of this year s Sarasota Film Festival. ....

A vocal critic of local government played a key role in denying the request, an outcome city officials described as highly unusual.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District gave high marks to the city’s plans to build an 18-acre wetland to improve the quality of water discharging into Sarasota Bay.
In its assessment of the project, SWFWMD staff said the project’s treatment of runoff from a 5,800-acre watershed would remove a significant amount of nutrients from water entering the bay.
A report said the project was cost effective and in line with the governor’s directive to prioritize projects that will mitigate harmful algal blooms. Staff deemed the project a high priority for a $1.5 million grant. ....

Mask policy to expire June 30 for Sarasota schools

The Sarasota County School Board took steps on Tuesday toward assuring families that officials expect the next school year will be a return to normal and that they plan to allow several COVID-19-related policies to expire.
The School Board will allow a policy requiring students to wear masks for the majority of the day and to sit behind a tri-fold desk shield during a “mask break” to end on June 30.
Next school year the district will no longer ask teachers to provide concurrent learning, teaching students both in person and remotely at the same time via web cameras.
The district will ask teachers to develop plans for how students can continue learning next year if they have to go into quarantine, without relying on the concurrent learning model, which has been widely panned by teachers, administrators and parents. ....

Florida water manager denies Bobby Jones water quality project

SARASOTA Sarasota’s own representative on a state board that manages regional water resources recently voted against a $1.5 million grant targeted for a crucial wetland redevelopment project at Bobby Jones Golf Course.
The denial was “highly unusual and something I never experienced in my 27 years of public service,” said Sarasota City Manager Marlon Brown in an email to city commissioners and staff informing them of the decision.
In a 2-1 subcommittee vote last week, Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board Vice Chairman Joel Schleicher voted to deny the city’s request that the district contribute half of the $3 million construction cost to build an 18-acre wetland treatment system next to the municipal course.   ....
